Minister Meets With Governor, UK OT Director

Minister of National Security Wayne Caines welcomed Governor John Rankin and the Director of Overseas Territories Mr. Ben Merrick to the Ministry Offices.

A Government spokesperson said, “Mr. Merrick, who is visiting Bermuda from 24 – 26 September, is responsible for UK policy towards its overseas territories, with a particular focus on good governance and the rule of law, economic sustainability and international relations.

“The Governor and Overseas Territories Director specifically wished to extend their thanks and appreciation to the members of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation [DRRM] team for their work during Hurricane Humberto and Tropical Storm Jerry.

“The public will be aware the Disaster Risk Reduction and Mitigation Team is responsible for bringing together all of the disaster plans for Bermuda and ensuring that all agencies and Government Departments are engaged and fully committed to continuously updating these plans, and training their staff in the execution of those plans.

“During the two back to back storms of Hurricane Humberto and Tropical Storm Jerry, the DRRM team worked closely with the Emergency Measures Organisation [EMO].”

Minister Caines said, “We were very pleased to welcome the Governor and Mr. Merrick to the Ministry Offices. The Governor and Overseas Director took the opportunity to extend their thanks and appreciation to the DRRM team.

“Mr. Merrick and Governor Rankin also shared that they were extremely impressed and encouraged by the way in which the EMO worked effectively to ensure that the Country was prepared for the storms and our quick restoration efforts following Hurricane Humberto.

Minister Caines added, “During our meeting this morning, I shared with the Governor and Mr. Merrick that in creating the DRRM team, we selected individuals with the necessary skills, experience and expertise.

“Team members have been on many committees and groups and have been integral in the development of all of Bermuda’s national emergency plans. They were able to step in to swift action these past few weeks in dealing with the impending storms and I join the Governor and the Overseas Territories Director in commending their commitment and dedication to Bermuda.”

The DRRM team is led by its Director, Steve Cosham, a 37 year veteran of the Bermuda Police Service. Other members of the DRRM team include, Kelly Trott, Principal Customs Officer, Troy Furbert, a Divisional Officer with the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, Dean Rubaine, a Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant with the Royal Bermuda Regiment, Lyndon Raynor a Sergeant with the Bermuda Police Service, Rache Hodsoll, a Health Dept Disaster Coordinator and Stuart Daniels a Cybersecurity expert.
