BA Bermuda Flights Cancelled: Volcanic Eruption

April 15, 2010

British Airways flight BA2233, scheduled to leave London for Bermuda this afternoon, is one of the hundreds of flights that has been cancelled due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland.

Update Fri Apr 16: British Airways flights departing to and from the UK are cancelled until at least 1am UK local time on Saturday morning [9pm tonight Bermuda time].

British Airways has also advised:

Please be advised that the flight out of Bermuda tonight BA 2232 has also been cancelled because all airports in the UK are closed.

Passengers need to phone the BA toll free number 1 800 AIRWAYS to rebook their flights or to apply for a refund.

Flights are being closed for sale for tomorrow’s (Friday) flights until the situation becomes clearer as many aircraft all over the world are now in the wrong position which will, in turn, cause ‘knock on’ problems.

In case passengers are having difficulty getting through to the toll-free number due to the volume of calls, British Airways will open its local ticket office at the L.F. Wade International Airport today from 1.30 pm to 7pm to assist those passengers who need to rebook their flights.

Volcanic ash started spewing after the volcano’s eruption yesterday, sending up smoke and ash that posed “a significant safety threat to aircraft,” Britain’s National Air Traffic Service said.

British airports closed include Birmingham, Bristol, Heathrow, Stansted, Newcastle, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and more according to the British Airport Authority. The ash also caused closures and delays across other parts of Europe.

The volcano is located under the glacier Eyjafjallajokull and the eruption partially melted the glacier, hence hundreds of Iceland residents are evacuating to escape rising floodwaters due to th eruption.
