Sailors Shatter Record By 19 Hours

BeauGesteSkipper Karl Kwok and his crew onboard the Beau Geste [pictured to the left] completely shattered the Bermuda Ocean Race record by almost 19 hours. The race started from Chesapeake Bay, Maryland on Friday June 11, with Beau Geste crossing the St George’s finish line yesterday morning [June 14].

The Hong Kong-based boat finished the 752-nautical mile course in an elapsed time of 66 hours, 22 minutes and 41 seconds, completely eclipsing the previous record of 85 hours set in 2008.

Beau Geste didn’t linger in St. George’s for long, heading out the same day for a return trip to the United States as Beau Geste will also compete in the Newport-to-Bermuda Race that begins this Friday June 18th. They are, as of this writing, is approximately two thirds of the way back to Maryland now.

Mr Kwok, the skipper, Karl C. Kwok is the Vice-President of Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and President of Hong Kong Sailing Federation, and is a banker by trade.
