8MB Now Offered By All Service Providers

September 27, 2010

1260785_laptop_workAll of Bermuda’s internet service providers are now offering 8MB, following the announcement by Bermuda CableVision that they would be offering 8MB cable internet access earlier this month.

North Rock was first internet service provider to offer the 8MB with an introductory price of $154.95.

FKB Transact followed with a price of $128.95, and then Logic officially introduced 8MB for $129.95. North Rock responded by cutting its introductory price by $25, price matching the other two service providers at $129.95.

This results in all three residential internet providers offering the 8MB for approximately the same price. Adding in CableVision’s $55 per month for 8MB, brings the total cost for 8MB to around $185 per month.

TBI, which at present is not allowed to offer residential internet, offer the 8MB to its corporate customers for $119.95.

Cable internet is the fastest access provider on island, with the DSL offered through Bermuda Telephone Company presently topping out at 6MB. In addition, CableVision has recently asked the Telecommunications Commission to allow them to offer 12MB high speed data service.

The interesting thing about this is that only BTC are plugged into TBI but BTC top out at 6Mb so TBI can’t actually provide the 8Mb service until either Cablevision plugs and plays with them or BTC improves their service.

These Internet providers are all telling you that they offer these great speeds but the reality is that you never get what you pay for.

I am finding that after about 7:30 in the evening the internet slows down to a crawl. When I should be getting 4 mg I am getting less than 1 mg – this makes downloading movies etc tiresome.

If I was getting the 4 mg I am paying for it would be more then enough bandwidth to do almost anything. Why would I pay extra for 8mg when in reality I will probably get what I am now.

My advice to all these providers is fix what you already have. When you fix the oversubscription problem then think about offering higher speeds for more money.

Question: do you use Cable Internet or an ISP?

    • There is so much that could be contributing to your perceived slowness. How are you benchmarking the decrease in performance?

I’m on a 4.5 mbit connection with CV/Transact and my service has been awesome… sure sometimes I experience lag though its usually because the sites i’m connecting to have awful ping times.

@Reality.. are you on cable or btc though. Cable has basically faster speeds, but shares connection so around 730 when people settle in to watch tv, it clogs up bandwidth, whereas dsl has slower speeds normally, but is pretty constant regardless of how many people are using it.

  4. Peace and Love says:

All companies are rip offs!!! compared to internet providers in the States prices offered here are ridiculous!!!! Competetion is limited so they can charge whatever they like!!! overseas you can get cable, phone and interner for as low as $29.99

I am also paying for 4meg from cablevision and only lately has the evening download speed become slow. So slow that it literally becomes useless. Sites load extremely slow, i cant stream video and i cant play online games. I know the tech they use has the disadvantage of having to share bandwidth, but they arent supposed to let areas oversaturate to the point where the connection is useless. Ive called them and reported the problem and i urge anyone else who is having very slow evening speeds to do the same. The more people that complain, the more likely something will get done. (i hope! lol)

On another note, im terribly disappointed in the service were receiving from the local providers. 8meg for $190… woopdeedoo! If providers in Jamaica can deliver 15meg for ~$40, why cant we get 15meg in Bermuda for the same market value? I probably wouldnt mind paying $190 for 15meg, but right now, i feel like im being raped, cheated, shafted and just plain old ripped off!

    • Definitely agree, internet prices in Bermuda are expensive. It’d be nice to see a breakdown analysis of costs and what contributes to why its so pricey here compared to other markets… maybe Bernews could even cover the story. ;)

    • Used to it too ... says:

And the service providers are loving every minute of it ! Doesn’t matter what business it is … Piracy is alive and well in Bermuda , but no-one is willing to make the sacrifice and STOP buying their services/products and do without.

  6. Truth is killin' me says:

Buyer beware. Cablevision is a big con when it advertises blazing speeds. Like the previous post said it slow’s right down to a crawl around 7.30-8.00 and also my cable loses picture as well up here in Southampton at the same time and starts to pixilate! Buyer beware…I’m letting you all know. For the price it is a rip off!

    Good day,

This might address some of your comments about 8 Mbps service.

The Outcome of 8 Mbps service being offered in Bermuda:

    Hope this helps.

That looks like a matrix someone from the Computer Society of Bermuda once posted, a group that no longer seems to exist unfortunately. I paid a membership fee about two years ago to join and then the organization fizzled. :o \

  8. Chris Gibbons says:

I spoke to BTC the other day and not only did they tell me they couldn’t provide 8mbps service but had no idea if and when they might be able to! Pathetic …

    • meduaguru2 says:

My sources at BTC tell me that they are running “tests” right now and will be offering the 8MB service after completing them. Whether you will be able to get 8MB service will vary depending on whether you are located / connected through one of their newer hubs / nodes that are located around the island. An example of one is down by Collectors Hill Esso on the left. I am waiting along with you…but at least they are working on it.

OK Just got off the phone with Cable vision and basically:

They were not even aware that TBI is part of the providers to offer 8MB.

TBI does “want” to offer 8MB to corporate customers but cable vision has stated they do not offer this with TBI and are not sure when they will.

BTC cannot and will not offer an uploard speed greater then 800kbs and download will depend on you distance from their office.

I guess Bermuda is the one place where you DONT get what you pay for :)

  11. John says:

I’ve had the 8 MB service with Cablevision for a month now and I’m disappointed with the download speeds. I get less than 1 Mb during evenings and weekends.
I’ve decided to “downgrade” to DSL to get a more consistent download rate.
