Bermuda National Trust Awards Legal Firm
Mello Jones & Martin received the Bermuda National Trust’s highest honour, the Silver Palmetto, which was presented at a ceremony yesterday evening [Oct 14]. In addition, other awards were given in the areas of architecture, preservation, education, awareness and long service to the Trust.
The Silver Palmetto is awarded for outstanding service to the community in areas of concern to the Bermuda National Trust or for service to the Trust, which includes a significant donation of time, effort or funds. Mello Jones & Martin received this particular award for legal service to the Bermuda National Trust.
Over the last 20 years, Mello Jones & Martin has continuously provided a variety of legal services in order to protect Bermuda’s sensitive lands and buildings. This has included the legal defense against the destruction of a large woodland tract at the Chaplin estate in Warwick, which went right through to the Court of Appeal.
Pictured below is Andrew Martin, who accepted the award on behalf of Mello Jones & Martin, and Jennifer Gray, Executive Director, Bermuda National Trust:
Andrew Martin, Partner at Mello Jones & Martin, said: “We are proud to have received the Silver Palmetto award as a reflection of our support for the aims of the Bermuda National Trust. The organisation works extremely hard to protect and promote Bermuda’s natural and cultural heritage and we’re delighted to have assisted them with legal support to help preserve lands and buildings for the benefit of Bermuda.”
Executive Director of the Bermuda National Trust, Jennifer Gray, says: “Mello Jones & Martin has been involved in virtually all the properties in the Bermuda National Trust portfolio. The law firm’s relationship with the Trust goes back decades and we are truly grateful for their invaluable support, without which we may not own the land and historic buildings that we do today. It gives me great pleasure to present the Bermuda National Trust’s highest accolade to this outstanding organization.”
Bermuda National Trust has become the largest private land-owner on the island with 240 acres of nature reserves, cemeteries and agricultural land and 55 historic buildings in the organisation’s care.
The Bermuda National Trust awards have been presented annually for the last 25 years to individuals, organizations, groups, and schools who share the same goals as the Trust, which are to protect and promote Bermuda’s unique natural and cultural heritage.
