Regiment: New Digital Communications System

November 26, 2010

The Bermuda Regiment is replacing its twenty-year old radio communications system with Sepura TETRA radios. This is the first use of a TETRA based system by any government agency in Bermuda. The new TETRA terminals will replace the Regiment’s existing VHF island-based communication system. The new digital system will be used for all the Regiment’s core functions.

Sepura radios are designed, developed and supplied for the general public safety market of police, fire services and ambulances, as well as the military. Sepura, headquartered in Cambridge, UK, has an international network of distributors and partners supplying organisations in over 100 countries worldwide. The Regiment has selected Sepura’s STP8200 hand-portable and SRG Gateway Repeater radios in a man pack configuration.

Captain Chris Gauntlett, Adjutant of the Bermuda Regiment, commented: “The Bermuda Regiment has been in need of an updated communication system for several years. Recent reports on Fitness for Role had highlighted this need as a key component to operational effectiveness.”

Major Phil Birch, Royal Anglian Regiment (seconded Bermuda Regiment) and appointed Staff Officer for the Bermuda Regiment speaking of the selection: “Relaying information in a military setting is essential in order to achieve any objective. Clear and reliable communications can be the difference between success and failure, so a robust and effective communication system is an absolute must-have.”

The Bermuda Regiment was formed from the amalgamation, in 1965, of two units – the Bermuda Rifles (BR) and the Bermuda Militia Artillery (BMA).
