Basketball Coach Provides Team Insight

December 11, 2010

Following the draft for the Bermuda Basketball Association upcoming Elite City League, Coach Roderick Spencer took time out to grade the drafts and provide some insight from a trained eye.

Teams were graded on areas of the game covered with the draft; Ball Handling, Shooters, Post Play, Rebounding, Scoring, Perimeter Defenders, Interior Defenders, & Experience/Youth Mix.

Coach Spencer said “Every defense can be broken and every offense can be stopped. Do you have the discipline, Team Commitment and Game IQ to make it happen?” You can find the list of team players here and the Coach’s analysis for each team below.

Team 1, Head Coach: Troy Pitcher, Asst. Coach: John Lee

  • Team strength will be defending the basket; offensive rebounding and having Pushkin as a 3rd coach should be useful. The offensive rebounding will be useful as I think they will struggle a little with consistency from beyond 15 feet.
  • Grade: B-

Team 2, Head Coach: Cecil Hendrickson, Asst. Coach: Derrick Hendrickson

  • This team really interests me, they have done a very good job drafting experience and youth and have most positions covered. Ryan and Hurdle were a tough front court for the undefeated Smith Wildcats in the PBL so should work well together. If the coach’s can put the pieces together in the right spots and the players are committed and play team ball they will be tough.
  • Grade: A

Team 3, Head Coach: Cedric Oates, Asst. Coach: Graham Robinson

  • Good rebounding, role players, and a guys who want the shot should keep this team competitive. They might struggle a little with point guard play but this can be compensated for. They have some energized and game ready young players but are not deep at key spots.
  • Grade: B-

Team 4, Head Coach: Ralph Scott, Asst. Coach: Jeremy Hassell

  • Not sure how Crumpler stayed on the board till the 4th pick but I’m sure Coach R.Scott was happy to have him fall in his lap. He later added Mike Smith, these are two of the most aggressive players with the ball and both finish well at the rim and are good rebounding guards and they will need it. This will be their bread and butter. The area they will need someone to step up is in the big man area. With their perimeter players the big guys will not be needed to score but rebounding and defending the post might prove a challenge at times.
  • Grade: B+

Team 5, Head Coach: Jahmal Scott, Asst. Coach: Kent Tacklyn

  • This league will provide a chance for many players that have not been main stream blue chip guys to show their worth and this team will lead the way in that area. Another shock for me personally was Steven Simons MVP from the Undefeated Smith Wildcats staying on the board till the 5th pick. Another Coach Scott (J) I’m sure was happy with that. I’m interested to see some of these guys step up into new leading roles for this team.
  • Grade: C+

Team 6, Head Coach: Gavin Mackenzie

  • This team has no mane yet but should be called “Go with what you know” Coach Mackenzie has selected a well balanced team and most of the players he has experance coaching in the past so the learning curve should be easier then some other Coaches and teams. Very solid on the boards, experienced, good young players, should be able to pressure most teams on the ball and decent from beyond 18feet.
  • Grade: A-
