Police Purchase Pre-owned Vehicles From UK

February 1, 2011

The Bermuda Police Service have purchased four pre-owned police vehicles from the United Kingdom, at a significant cost savings as compared to new models. A spokesperson said “The cars were purchased at a total cost of ₤20,000 ($31,000) and will be used as armed response vehicles. Similar cars purchased new would run in excess of $75,000 each.”

One BMW has been delivered, and a second BMW and two Audi cars are expected to arrive later this month or early February. The Police said that BMW and Audi are two of the preferred auto manufacturers used by British police as the vehicles are safer and more durable for carrying heavy equipment.

Pre-Owned BMW Police Car

A spokesperson said: “The Bermuda Police Service is pleased to announce that we have taken advantage of an opportunity to buy four pre-owned police vehicles from the United Kingdom. The Service has taken delivery of one BMW motorcar; a second BMW and two Audi cars are expected to arrive later this month or early February. ”

“The Bermuda Police Service negotiated the transfer with West Midlands Police through our Assistant Commissioner, David Mirfield, who retired from West Midlands.”

“The cars were purchased at a total cost of ₤20,000 ($31,000) and will be used as armed response vehicles. Similar cars purchased new would run in excess of $75,000 each. BMW and Audi are two of the preferred auto manufacturers used by British police as the vehicles are safer and more durable for carrying heavy equipment. The cars will carry police markings, lights and sirens in the normal manner, so the public will have no difficulty in spotting them.”

  1. College Graduate says:

So why cant i bring in a “pre-owned” car?

  2. Devin says:

If only the rest of us were allowed to bring in used cars

  3. Pat says:

sooo that means 4 OLD POLICE CARS have been or will be CUT, right???
once again Gov. spending $ where not needed. smh

  4. JT says:

So i guess this means i can press go on that used Audi A3 that i haven been looking at then

  5. Scott says:

orrr we could say awesome… cost savings.. well done.

you guys cant bring in guns but the police do… no one whines about that..?

  6. BermudaGuy says:

So who is the Audi dealer here? I didn’t know that BMW M5′s could fit on our roads. I guess if anyone is more deserving it’s our police officers and they’re ‘excellent driving skills’. Either way they’re going to love flooring it at the airport!

    • James says:

Firstly they are not M5′s they are probably 523i or a diesel model. Bermuda motors will be capable of servicing them as long as they have the correct diagnostic equipment. As for the Audi’s they are VW products, so likely HWP will take over servicing of those models. I at first was shocked about these cars, now knowing they are second hand and very well priced I have changed my perception on it. Still don’t think they will easily fit down the lanes in some of the more built up areas but time will tell i guess.

      • TG says:

Bermuda Motors does not have the diagnostic ability to repair these vehicles. Neither does HWP! As for parts, once they get written off the first time, they’ll be scrap. However, why the Bermudian Police Force needs cars that are capable of 140mph+ is beyond me. Yes, they may only cost £20,000 each, but once shipping & duty are added on, it would be cheaper to bring in cars directly from Japan along with the rest of Bermuda’s new vehicles

        • Devin says:

I doubt they have to pay duty. They are already going around the law to allow them to be imported.

        • Scott says:

err it seems they were more brought in as heavy carry response vehicles as opposed to lightning fast pursuit vehicle.

funny, complain that police have the tools, but when they get them we complain they cost too much.
hell they could all get hand-me down uniforms and people would complain about something..

get over it.. they swap their cars all the time… this time it was publicized and its a “nicer” car then most people have… so people whine… even if it is built for a different purpose then driving around or showing off.

        • MM says:

The BPS have an in house technician who services the fleet, they have the diagnostic availability to service these and other vehicles.

Bermuda Motors also have the diagnostics as they service the governor’s BMW 750 Li.

        • Logic76 says:

From Japan huh? You mean like the Subaru’s that are used by response drivers? Oh yeah! The new BMW’s and Audi’s are being used by drivers who hold the “advanced” driving qualifications, not the regular “response” qualifications.

  7. Icarus says:

Fair-play to the Police for doing this. Saving money and aquiring state of the art equipment. So what if it’s not brand-new! It’s fit for purpose, fit for use, and saves the tax-payer a fair amount of cash. It’s a great recovery in light of the recent silliness with Segway T3s. Good work BPS. It’s nice to see a ‘good news story’ in relation to govt spending.

    • That_Bermudian_guy says:

OMG I acually read some possitve reply comments about the POLICE… Its a first!!!!!

      • itwasn't me says:

how’s this for positive……I’ll bet my condo that one of them toys would be smashed up before Good Friday! Any Bets??????

  8. Tired of Complainers says:

You people complain about every little thing. I think that it’s a good idea especially since they’d typically go out and buy new cars. All the negativity has to stop…try to find the positive. Most of you probably don’t need new cars anway (from Bermuda or abroad).

  9. Terry says:

Well, by the end of the year, we will be getting 4 used Tanks from Egypt.

    It’s all the UBP’s fault.

  10. percival says:

So y didnt anyone complain about the former premeir and his gasoline 7 series $150,000 BMW….to drive him from home to work????? no matter what happens as long as they are vehicles and people on the road…yur gonna have accidents…get over it…cops are human too…they have families and beleive it or not….they are entitled to make mistakes which they have to pay for the same way we have to pay for our mistakes…i dont complain about getting a ticket for a seatbelt cause thats the officers way of telling me hey percy u messed up now u gotta pay some money to the government so they can put fuel in my car to save the next guys life….GROW D HELL UP AND TAKE YOUR HEADS OUT OF THE GROUND BERMUDA

    • itwasn't me says:

yep cops r human alright….they drive around with the window up and the a/c on……

    • Truth be told... says:

Where was your head when people were complaining about Doc Browns BMW and the lies about how much it was costing to fix the old Peugeot GP1, I believe Derrick Burgess was the one who apologized for the “incorrect information”. It’s people like you driving around without your seat belt on, breaking the law, and wasting the cops time and our money to give you a ticket, thinking that others some how gain something when another person breaks the law. There is a huge difference between making a mistake and being irresponsible, you are not punished for making mistakes, you are for breaking the law.

  11. Terry says:

Don’t worry Percival…plenty of ground cummin up for the ones who just grow veed……………………..ca’nt sell it…just smoke it. Jah rules….

  12. Nicki says:

Why do they need new(used) cars just to give out speeding tickets? It’s not like they find any criminals. All these toys for nothing.

    • Scott says:

      do poeple not read articles?

“and will be used as armed response vehicles” does not mean “giving out tickets”…

      • Um just sayin says:

I know!!! If only they would just read articles properly before commenting!!! It clearly states the uses for these vehicles? sigh
