Photos & Videos: National Heroes Convention

May 15, 2011

[Updated] Yesterday [May 14], the Young Progressives held the National Heroes Convention at City Hall. The ceremony served to honour the achievements of trade union pioneer Dr. E.F. Gordon, political, social and economic trailblazer Sir Henry [Jack] Tucker and civil rights champion Dr. Pauulu Kamarakafego [Dr. Roosevelt Brown].

Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling spoke at the event, paying homage to the heroes chosen saying that while “we should not be ruled by the past, the best way to prepare for the future is to look back at that past. The more that we learn about it, and our heroes, the stronger we can become as a nation.”

On Sunday, June 19 the Official National Heroes’ Day Induction Ceremony will be held in the Show Ring of the Botanical Gardens.

Update: Statement by the founder of Bermuda Young Progressives Mr. Gershwyn ‘Shiloh’ Smith:

We wish to thank the public and the community for their support and participation in our Heritage National Heroes Day Convention activities and all who made it a success.

We were particularly thankful and proud of the participation and presentations by the Deputy Governor of Bermuda to the various heroes’ family members. Dr. Roosevelt Brown (Pauulu) brother Edgbert Brown and his niece Sherry Tucker were fine representatives. The daughter of Dr. Gordon, Patricia Gordon Pamplin JP MP, and Shadow Minister of Works & Engineering Constituency #23 Paget West graciously read out the nominations papers and spoke eloquently of her father and the heroes.

Many people have told us they were touched by the children’s awareness of their community heroes and the presentation from the schools Victor Scott, Mt. St. Agnes, and Dellwood Schools.

We are hoping to take further Heritage National Hero celebrations to St. George this June.

Does anyone out there know what’s going on here? Not an official government function…or was it? And yet these people are there talking to….anybody? And another event in June? Is this all part of the Proud to be Bermudian stuff that we are all supposed to be in ecstasy over?
I am so over blowing our own horn when the evidence on the ground is a little thin.

Must admit, I am struggling to understand this.

Plus, who are all these people in the photographs, and how do they relate to National Heroes? Others will probably know who these people are I guess.

Well…..so much for national pride. Deputy Governor standing with his hands behind his back, the other two doods sitting chilin on the right whilst God Save the Queen was being tromboned….Nice feature but you don’t play a full verse for the Dep/Gov but anyway…call me old fashioned…I need a light and tropical stormy…..
