Tourism Boost: ‘Nip & Tuck Vacations’

July 26, 2011

Yesterday [July 25] in the House of Assembly Shadow Minister for Business Development & Tourism Patricia Gordon-Pamplin made a number of suggestions to boost Bermuda’s tourism, including what she termed “nip and tuck vacations.”

Ms Gordon-Pamplin suggested that “to the extent we are looking for something new and different, this is new.”  She noted we have first class spas already on the island, and said we could market the two concepts together and to implement a programme of that nature we would need the right clinical environments, and to “lure plastic surgeons to our shores.”

According to statistics released earlier this year by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the overall number of cosmetic procedures has increased 155% since the tracking of the statistics first began.

Almost 9.5 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2010. The most frequently performed surgical procedure was breast augmentation and the most popular nonsurgical procedure was Botox injections.

Many nations worldwide cater to medical tourism, and specifically plastic surgery tourism, including Costa Rica, Malaysia, Thailand, Dominican Republic and many more. Below is a NBC video news report on plastic surgery vacations in Brazil:

  1. Tired of nonsense says:

Out of curiosity, does anyone in BDA already offer plastic surgery services?

  2. In General says:

Think this could be a great idea! Work with the “luxury” hotels we have to offer recovery packages post surgery!

  3. Good Grief says:

Talk about completely missing the point…This “politician” clearly has not been off the island much. There is a recession! People who want plastic surgery have to have one of two things: 1. Money or 2. A Sugar Daddy. The world is very slim on both of these at the moment which is precisly why 3rd world countries like the Dominican, Costa Rica and others are seeing more traffic. The number 1 country for medical travel is Colombia. They have the best surgeons AND the best prices. It is amazing how cheap it is there. I’m talking like 2k for a breat augmentation, after care, flights, food, lodging…there is no way Bermuda can compete with this…unless of course we become a 3rd world country soon…oh wait, thats exactly whats happening..maybe this is a brilliant idea!

  4. The Pains of Slowing Down says:

cant be serious nip n tuck @ KEMH yeah right!!!!

    • PEPPER says:

Can you imagine having a nip and tuck at K.E.M.H ! with the foreign doctors who we do not understand us and they do understand us !!!!! what the hell will they nic and tuck ????????????????????

  5. Peace says:

Dr. Johnson couldn’t touch me with a 10ft pole. so don’t think this is a good idea at all. and there aren’t many others that do it here on island

    • 32n64w says:

Dr. Johnson couldn’t touch me … with a 10ft pole.

    • PEPPER says:

Peace ,remember Doctor Brown only trusted Doctor Johnson to take the splinters out of his hand …what a joke that was !!!!I think we all know what caused that surgery and it was not splinters.

  6. Frieza says:

Why don’t you boost tourism with (Medical) Marijuana tourism!!!!!!

    • bermyshotta says:

@ Frieza – we guys could take all de tourists once Amsterdam closes down. hellooooooo. talk about millions/billions. smh

  7. Bermudian Born says:

Dr. Johnson has several female politicians on both side of the political party as clients, so this would not be new for them

  8. Kathy says:

Too bad they didn’t try their hardest to keep the best BERMUDIAN plastic surgeon, Dr. Bruce Lattyak, on the island full time.

Instead, they allowed a currently resident plastic surgeon to marry a Bermudian (allegedly out of convenience), push Dr. Lattyak off the island and when confronted immigration said (with regard to marriages of conveniences) “we don’t go into people’s bedrooms”!

Bermuda reaps what it sews…second class plastic surgery (from a non-Bermudian!)

  9. Sending the Wrong message to Young People says:

Im disturbed…..if your suggesting people to get plastic surgery…than all that talk when you tell your children that they are beautiful just the way they are just went out the window…i cannot beleive they want to offer something like this! What message are you sending to young people…That it is okay to get nicki minaj’s but, Pamela Anderson’s boobs, and micheal jackson’s nose. Im appalled that they will offer somthing like this. Maybe Patricia Gordon, you may wake up everday and say how UGLY you are, but I do not. For you to even suggest this, I hope that you find beauty within, beacuse you obviously lacking something.

  10. mystical band-aid says:

The lure of a few storm beaten palm trees and some very small pinkish beaches would have to be very powerful indeed to bring people from countries where Bermudians regularly travel to to get safe and complex procedures performed that they can’t or don’t feel comfortable getting done here at home .

And let’s not even go there with the price .. Like those palm trees and small beaches will magically make it worth it . Don’t forget to say a big ‘good morning’ to your surgical crew first ! !

  11. Alicia says:

Just to clarify a few items…

    1. We currently have 3 plastic surgeons in Bermuda ( dr lattyak who travels in and out / dr Johnson / dr hodgson)

2, dr Johnson so is no longer married to a bermudian, but holds a work visa like other guest workers (I unfortunately don’t know who holds it)

    3. Bvi already tried this form of tourism and it just isn’t profitable without really cheap medical costs, which Bermuda doesn’t have…

In a nutshell – fthis won’t take off here

  12. it is what it is says:

Are you serious???? say it isn’t so…..not at KEMH….ya joking right???? you can’t be serious????? snort, giggle, wheeze!!! ROTFLMAO!!! SMH and RME!!! and at what location are you planning this nipping and tucking??? surely not at KEMH??? I’m so flabbergasted you have me repeating myself!!!!!

  13. Hannah says:

I just want to say that Dr. Hodgson is great. She did a wonderful job fixing my leg and chin after a bike accident. My scar could have been much worse, but thanks to her careful stitching, it’s much smaller than expected, and healed up pretty quickly.
