Videos: UK MP David Lammy At PLP Banquet

October 31, 2011

British Labour Party MP David Lammy told the Progressive Labour Party banquet on Saturday [Oct.29] not to abandon its left-of-centre principles despite a global political climate which has seen voters grow increasingly conservative.

“In tough times, it is always tempting to turn to the right,” he told those attending the black-tie affair. “And my message, in what I suspect is an election period, is ‘Bermuda, don’t make that mistake’. Think about the tough choices, but don’t make that mistake …”

“It is hugely important that progressives and those in the labour family never allow the others to own change. You must be the change agents. And this is a party that has always been for change and for progress.

Video #1 [14 minutes]:

“That change agent that you must be must be deeper and firmer and bolder than it has been previously. That is how you win elections. Renew and go deeper. So now is the time to be bold and to grow the confidence of this community.”

First elected to the House of Commons as the MP for Tottenham at the age of 27 in 2000, at the time Mr. Lammy was the youngest member of the British Parliament. In 2003 Mr. Lammy was appointed as a Minister in the Department for Constitutional Affairs. After the 2005 UK election, Mr. Lammy was appointed Minister for Culture at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

Video #2 [8 minutes]:

In June 2007 Mr. Lammy was appointed as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. In October 2008 he was promoted to Minister of State and was appointed to the Privy Council.

In June 2009 the UK’s Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills was abolished and merged with the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform to form the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Mr. Lammy continued in the new department in his previous role as the Minister for Higher Education.

The British MP attended law school with Bermuda Government Minister Kim Wilson and was introduced by his old law school friend.

Video #3 [10 minutes]:

Senator Wilson described Mr. Lammy as “being like a brother” to her, saying he had visited Bermuda twice while they were at law school together. She described him as an “accomplished individual”, saying while they were at law school they shared a passion to “right the wrongs of the world.”

“In tough times, it is always tempting to turn to the right,” – possibly because staying on the left is financially unsustainable?

“right the wrongs of the world”.

    Irony.

While the big gala party and useless spending rolled on the drifters, homeless beggers, and stinking street people drank from rubbing alcohol bottles and slept on cardboard boxes just a few yeards away in Barrs Park.

Any reason why the purportedly pro-Bermudian PLP habitually hire/reserve a non-Bermudian owned hotel for all of their events? Could it be because their failed tourism policies have forced locals out of the marketplace in favour of multi-nationals?
