Final “Flu Express” On Saturday

November 4, 2011

The Department of Health sais that the final “Flu Express” will be held on Saturday November 5th in the car park of the Hamilton Health Centre, 67 Victoria Street, Hamilton. The cost is $10.00 per shot for adults and children aged 10 years and over, and free for seniors.

A statement released by the Ministry said, “The flu express will enable people to receive the flu vaccine while waiting in their car without getting out. This will make it easier for some people to access the vaccine.”

“It is advised that you dress comfortably to allow the Nurse easy access to the injection site in the upper arm.
Outbreaks of flu are most common in the winter and occur each year, peaking in the months of January and February in Bermuda.”

“Flu is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the influenza virus. It is generally spread from person to person by coughs and sneezes from an infected individual. In some people flu can be quite serious because it may increase their risk of developing complications such as pneumonia.”

“Such persons include the very young, the frail elderly and people with other medical conditions. Having an annual flu shot provides a high level of immunity to the current strains of flu virus. Influenza vaccine is recommended for all persons over the age of 6 months.”

“Who should consider attending the “Flu Express”. Persons 10 years and older. You will not be given the shot if: you have allergies to eggs or products from chicken, you have had a reaction to the flu shot before, and if you have a fever.”
