Two Leap Day Babies Born Yesterday
Bermuda welcomed two Leap Day babies this year, with two baby boys born yesterday [Feb.29], at King Edward Memorial Hospital.
Born on the most elusive day on the entire calendar, the little boys will only get to ‘officially’ celebrate their first birthday on February 29, 2016 — when they are four. But Leap Year babies are considered by many to be particularly lucky.
Alexis Hall is pictured below with her newborn Iymuni:
And the two Bermuda newborns are members of an extremely exclusive club — there are estimated to be just five million people around the world for whom a Leap Year birthday is not annual, but quadrennial.
Not only that, they get to keep the passage of time at bay. Many Leap Day babies — also known as Leaplings, Leapsters and 29ers — use their birthday as an excuse to remain forever young.
Patricia and Carlos Amaral with newborn Lucas, and siblings 3-year-old Mateus and 5-year-old Sophia:
A leap year is a year containing one additional day in February in order to keep the calendar year synchronised with the astronomical or seasonal year.
Because seasons and astronomical events do not repeat in a whole number of days, a calendar that had the same number of days in each year would, over time, drift with respect to the event it was supposed to track. By inserting an additional day into February once every four years, the drift can be corrected.
I Think that it is so special to be born on the 29th! Awesome!=)
Way to go see you both soon Iymuni your Brothers are excited in getting you home.
Congratulations Carlos, Patricia, Sofia and Mateus!
