Work Begins Removing City Hall Fountains

April 12, 2012

The City of Hamilton has begun work removing the fountains in front of City Hall. In an email being sent to those making inquiries, the City of Hamilton said, “How we use the steps, roadway and grass area at City Hall has changed over the last 50 years and will continue to change. The removal of the fountains is a temporary measure. In the short term, the area will be covered by grass.”

“Later this year, the City will invite interested parties to submit ideas and drawings on how we can redesign the front of City Hall, based on current and anticipated use. The selected design could potentially include one or more fountains and water features.

“Hamilton is a vibrant, progressive and exciting city in which to live, work and play. The temporary removal of the fountain will ultimately allow the City to add changes that reflects who we are today and how we could use the space in the future.

“We welcome your thoughts as we move forward and I encourage you to check back with us later in the year as we begin the process of soliciting ideas for the new look and feel for the front of City Hall.”

Many people are upset about this but when they see the new Ewart Brown park complete with a 100 foot statue similar to the MLK memorial – I think everyone will like it – be drawn to it if you will.

I know I’m looking forward to worshipping EB daily as I walk up Church Street.

It will be a fitting tribute to one so great – who needs a reflecting pool anyway – when we can look at Dr. Brown in total adoration.

@ Ron de Corner: Please! Don’t even put that out in the universe! Although it is interesting that the fountain has apparently been a burden on the Corporation for years but only now, now that they are under the Government, they choose to remove it.

On the other hand, if one of the real reasons is that the homeless are bathing in it, which was put forward as an issue, why not spend some of the money on a properly staffed homeless persons unit, or at least on a few showers. There is nothing like being able to get clean to restore one’s sense of self esteem. If I ever won the lottery, that’s what I would do – provide showers, shampoo, soap, tooth utensils, a comb, a change of clothing, socks, sneakers and a haircut. Ah well, dream on, old girl.

Fountains should stay!!! The pond needs to be made waterproof and the filtering system upgraded. The COH made a mistake voting to remove the pool in March and until the Resolution is reversed the Mayor is spinning the issue because of very poor decision making on the part of the Corporation^^
