RenaissanceRe Donates $1 Million To KEMH Project

June 5, 2012

Bermuda Hospitals Charitable Trust [BHCT] announced that RenaissanceRe has made a $1 million donation to the Why it Matters capital campaign, which is raising funds to redevelop King Edward VII Memorial Hospital [KEMH] by 2014.

This latest donation takes the running total for the campaign to $25 million since its launch just over a year ago. BHCT is leading the three-year capital campaign with a target of $40 million to put towards the $247 million redevelopment project. The project’s overarching aim is to deliver an enhanced level of hospital care for the benefit of the whole community.

L-R: Peter Durhager of RenaissanceRe, and Don Mackenzie, BHCT Trustee:

Neill Currie, President and CEO of RenaissanceRe, says: “Access to quality medical care matters to us all and investing in medical infrastructure is critical to our island’s sustainability. A project of this scale in a population this small requires the support of everyone who can help.

“We at RenaissanceRe are delighted to play our part in supporting this important project through this financial contribution, which will ultimately help all Bermudians, island residents and visitors.”

Wendy Augustus, Executive Director of BHCT, says: “We are grateful to RenaissanceRe for its incredible generosity in supporting the redevelopment of the island’s primary health care facility. The new hospital will be much more than bricks and mortar, it will stand as a vision of how Bermuda provides hospital care today and for decades to come.

“The response from the international business community, local companies and private individuals so far has been superb, but we still have a long way to go and we need to keep the whole island engaged and focused on the goal ahead.”

Individuals wishing to make a donation to the cause can do so online. Upon the completion of the redevelopment project, patients and visitors will benefit from a state-of-the-art medical facility, matched by an exceptional standard of clinical practice and patient-centred care.

The new hospital has been designed with specialist wards offering on-island expertise in order to manage the rising volume of chronic diseases and to reduce the need for overseas care. In addition, the new design incorporates education and wellness units to promote preventative health care measures.

So where are all the fools that think IB does nothing for Bermuda and think it takes away from Bermudians? Where are your comments now?

Thank you RenRe and other companies and individuals for your most wonderful donations. I pray that the Directors, etc. at the hospital will take at least 25,000 of RenRe’s donation over to the Extended Care, Alzheimers and continued care Units to enable the wards to be refurbished completely (beds that actually work, pressure mattresses on all beds, more recliner chairs, wheel chairs (as needed by individuals whose families can not afford to buy), hire therapists (Physio, Occupational and Speech)specifically for the Wards, nurses and nurses aides, update the Activities room, construct beautiful Pergolas in the gardens, another bus. This is just a short list of suggestions but I am sure families of the patients have more.

What a tremendous gift from RenRE, I would like to say “Merci’ as the entire island will no doubt at some point in our lives benefit from this most kind gesture. While I am at it “Thank You’ to all the other contributors whose generosity should not go unnoticed. This shows a real commitment to Bermuda by RenRE and obviously the island continues to serve them well…..
