Tyrell’s B-Side Art Exhibition To Open Tomorrow

June 23, 2012

Sunday, 24 June marks the official Grand Opening of the Tyrell’s B-Side Art Exhibition. The Grand Opening of this Art Exhibition, located on 43 Angle Street, will feature the works of Manuel Palacio and numerous other local artists which will last until the end of September 2012. The Gallery will be open from Tuesdays – Saturdays between 11am – 7pm every week from June – September 2012.

A spokesperson said, “The Economic Empowerment Zones Agency is well aware of the contributions that art and music have played within the North East Hamilton Community. To that end we have undertaken various programs that lend to the beautification of the EEZ.

“Last year during 2011 we partnered with Marsh & McLennan Companies as well as HSBC Bermuda on various beautification and enhancement projects throughout N.E Hamilton. Those companies and their employees , along with other community volunteers and students, provided assistance in painting homes, building planters, and designing and erecting murals in the EEZ.

“This current Art Exhibition will highlight the interconnection of our communities and the spirit and vibrancy that encapsulates North East Hamilton.

“The Tyrell’s B-Side Art Exhibition is a collaboration among the North East Hamilton EEZ, Entrepreneur James Tyrell – owner of Fish & Tings -, and Artist Manuel Palacio –. This initiative is aligns with the EEZ’s Community Development outreach which provides an opportunity for creative ideas and revitalization of the N.E. Hamilton community.

“Art can help entrepreneurs build market share and enhance their brand, and it has been proven that creativity is one of the top skills that employers desire. When approached by Mr. Palacio with the proposal, the North East Hamilton EEZ jumped at the opportunity to host such a ground breaking art exhibition in the EEZ community which will provide eclectic activity, attract new visitors, and engage the community in sharing the benefits of Arts and Culture.

“10 local Artists have submitted works which will be on display. Some of the artists are Gavin Smith, Antoine Hunt, Callix Smith and Ami Saunders. Chewstick will be providing the music for the launch and they are also a Sponsor of this Art Exhibition.”

The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Patrice Minors will be on hand to officially launch the Tyrell’s B-Side Art Exhibition at the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, which will take place on Sunday June 24th, 2012 from 7 pm to 10 pm. Accompanying her at the Ceremony will be North East Hamilton EEZ Economic Development Officer, Roxanne Christopher.

The Minister remarked that “the launch event will create an environment that will truley blend backgrounds, ethnicities, and our culture. Art has the uncanny way of bringing people together and this Exhibition will go a long way to enhancing our community development and revitalisation efforts within North East Hamilton”.

Roxanne Christopher, NE Hamilton EEZ Economic Development Officer and Project Manager remarked “Through exhibitions, performances and workshops, the arts provide opportunities for people to grapple with community concerns and become more familiar with their neighbours next door, in the next parish, at the ends of the island, or around the world”.

The poster in this article was provided by artist Manuel Palacio, and when asked about the depiction of former Premier Dr Ewart Brown, Mr Palacio said: “Better the Devil I know’ was a follow-up to my ‘Black Apartheid’ Exhibition.

“It was one of the comments that stuck. I interpreted it as: what I know is black, the Devil I know, is black, so it’s safer to go with the devil I know because I’m sure he is black, therefore like me.

“Even on mythological basis, we’re being racist. Dr. Brown is the symbol best fit, he is a polarizing figure in Bermuda. Like him or hate him will help you decide where you stand. Right or wrong it forces you to check and defend your premises.”
