Footballer Tumaini Steede Dies After Accident

July 12, 2012

Bermuda has suffered its third road traffic fatality this month, with the unfortunate news that footballer Tumaini Steede has succumbed to his injuries yesterday [July 11].

Around 2:15am on Monday, July 2nd the 22-year-old was involved in a serious motorcycle collision on Palmetto Road in Devonshire near the junction with Aeolia Drive.

He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment where he remained for over a week listed in critical condition in the ICU. A hospital spokesperson confirmed that Mr Steede succumbed to his injuries, and his obituary appears in today’s newspaper.

Mr Steede was an extremely talented football player, best known as a major part of the Devonshire Cougars team where he was a prolific goal scorer.

He also represented the island internationally on multiple occasions, and was part of the bronze medal winning team at the 2007 Island Games. He also was part of the 2009 CONCACAF U/20 Championship team, playing in international matches against the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.

After news of his death became known, social networks began to fill with numerous people paying tribute to the young athlete, with professional footballers Nahki Wells, Freddy Hall, and Reggie Lambe among those who paid tribute to Mr Steede.

The son of Cougars legend Cyril “Dago” Steede, young Mr Steede was an essential part of the Devonshire Cougars team. In 2011, he won the Bermuda Football Association [BFA] Young Player of the Year award. To watch a brief interview we did with Mr Steede last year click here.

This is the fifth road traffic fatality this year, and the third in under two weeks. 80-year-old Don Wildman of Florida died last week when the rental cycle he was riding collided with a wooden railing in Warwick.

Mr Wildman’s death followed after that of of 33-year-old German national and Bermuda resident Christoph Nagel who was killed a motorcycle accident in Hamilton parish on on July 1st.

48-year-old Michael Lancelotta, a visitor from Rhode Island, was killed in a motorcycle accident in St George’s on February 18, and 37-year-old Dr Joseph Footitt, a visitor from the UK, died following a motorcycle accident on Harbour Road on June 13.

A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 22 year old Tumaini Steede of Devonshire. Mr. Steede was seriously injured in a motorcycle collision that occurred around 2:15am on Monday, July 2nd along Palmetto Road in Devonshire near the junction with Aeolia Drive.

“He was admitted to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit as a result and ultimately succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday, July 11th.

“The investigation into this fatal collision is ongoing and a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to Mr. Steede’s family to assist them during this difficult time.

“Police continue to encourage any witnesses, particularly anyone who may have been traveling through the Palmetto Road, Devonshire area around 2am Monday, July 2nd or anyone with any information regarding this incident, to contact PC Shantia Furbert at the Roads Policing Unit on 295-0011.

“The Bermuda Police Service extends condolences to the family & friends of Mr. Steede.”

I was thinking the same thing-there are so many wicked people going around doing bad things and here’s a decent young man cut off in the prime of his life. These hoodlums just need to be grateful to wake up every day-instead of doing bad things with your life, be thankful for another day.

I’ll be thinking of Tumaini’s family at this difficult time. I pray God gives them the strength to deal with the difficult days, months and years ahead…

  6. IT HURTS REAL BAD!!! says:

There are so many emotions that i am feeling right now about the death of Tumaini Steede. I’m hurt, I’m sad, I’m BROKEN and I’m in shock all at once! When i heard the news i was at work and i was no more good. I had to knock off for the rest of the week. I can’t even go to work right now! I have had the great priveledge and opportunity to get to know this guy on a personal level on and off the field! I”m gonna tell you this! This guy was an EXTREMELY TALENTED football player! In the words of a Bermudian he was “TERRIBLE” and ” DEADLY” altogether when it came to football. No one that has played with or against this guy would argue differently. He could have made ANY team in Bermuda at his age!I wish that he could have been around so that the whole of Bermuda could have really seen him reach his full potential. He LOVED football and he could have played professionally beacause thats how much natural talent the guy had.The guy just had it when it came to football. I regret not asking this guy to show me some of his tricks! The guy had so many tricks I’m sure he wouldn’t have minded showing me one. He was real close with his brother Moses and his Daddy Dago! You ALWAYS saw him and Moses hanging together or him and his Daddy in the truck! The last time I had spoken to Tumaini was early last week at Devonshire Rec! He had only been back in Bermuda for a couple of weeks so he was looking forward to this summer! He is gonna be a HUGE miss to the Devonshire Rec Family and thats no lie! He will NEVER EVER be replaced! I have to smile right now when i think about how passionate this guy was about football! He would tell you in a heartbeat to pick up ya game if he thought that you were playing poorly or slacking on the field or didn’t give him the ball when and how he wanted it. We used to have our words on the field but I never realized until now that the only reason we had words was because we were both so passionate about the one thing we both LOVED and that was football! He definitely made me improve and step up my game everytime i played with him because i knew that he weren’t taking no nonesense when it came to football and neither was I! So thank you Tumaini Steede for making me become a better player! Now I have a mission to be just as “DEADLY” AND “TERRIBLE” as you were! I’m starting training now! I even joined the the gym when i found out about his passing and i NEVER go to gyms but you have inspired me! Thank You and I love you! Condolences to the Steede family during this time of bereavement! GOD WILL NEVER GIVE YOU MORE THAN YOU CAN BEAR!
