BWS ‘Closely Monitoring’ Tropical Depression

August 23, 2012

[Updated - upgraded to Tropical Storm] The Bermuda Weather Service [BWS] said Tropical Depression 10 will be “closely monitored for its potential approach early next week.” The BWS said at this time TD 10′s closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs is forecast to be 691 nautical miles to the south-east at 6am on Sunday August 26.

BWS Meteorologist  Fred Byrley said: “The long range forecast is dependent on the track of TD 10. The latest advisory on TD 10 from the NHC (Advisory #3) has TD10 around 300 miles southwest of Bermuda Monday night, which matches well with UKMET. GFS turns the storm more to the north-northeast passing 180 miles to the east of Bermuda Monday night.

“If TD 10 does not hold together or passes far from Bermuda, weak ridging from the east-northeast will dominate into early next week. Too much uncertainty at this time with TD 10 and will have to continue to monitor TD 10 closely. Expected watches/warnings are depending on TD 10.”

The U.S National Hurricane Center said: “Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph…55 km/h…with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and the depression is expected to become a Tropical Storm later today or Friday.”

Tropical Depression 10 is one of two systems churning away in the Atlantic, with Tropical Storm Isaac presently affecting parts of the Caribbean.

Reuters reports that it has “weakened slightly as it dumped heavy rain off Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands on Thursday but it was expected to strengthen into a hurricane before tearing across the Dominican Republic and Haiti.”

“Isaac also continued to pose a big threat to Florida, where it is on track to make landfall on Monday as the Republican National Convention is due get underway in Tampa,” Reuters said.

Isaac also forced the U.S. military to postpone the latest hearings for the five detainees charged in the Sept. 11 attacks, as officials evacuated staff members and others from Guantanamo Bay.

Update 12.02pm: In their 12pm update, the U.S National Hurricane Center said that the depression is now Tropical Storm Joyce.
