Bermuda Business Delegation to Visit Toronto
On October 4, a delegation from Bermuda, including the Ministry of Business Development and Tourism, the Bermuda Stock Exchange [BSX] and financial services executives representing Business Bermuda member companies will host an afternoon series of panel session to discuss recent developments in Bermuda, which present opportunities for Canadian companies.
This is the fourth consecutive year that Business Bermuda and the BSX – together with host law firm Bennett Jones LLP – have orchestrated this business development initiative, one that serves to further build on the already strong ties between the two jurisdictions.
“It is always a pleasure to visit Toronto in the Fall and to re-connect with the business community there. The strong ties between Bermuda and Canada, in terms of trade, business generation and academia, continue to grow, and the BSX is proud to be part of this annual project” says Greg Wojciechowski, CEO of the BSX.
“Bermuda and Canada have strong economic links that have fueled growth and prosperity for both countries,” said Cheryl Packwood, CEO of Business Bermuda. “We are very pleased to return to Toronto and look forwarding to continuing the dialogue and discussion with Canadian business leaders that have led to innovation and excellence and fostered so many new business opportunities.”
Ross Webber, Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Business Development and Tourism, will open the session with comments on the new Bermuda tourism campaign. He will be followed by keynote speaker Kevan Cowan, President TSX Markets Group and Group Head of Equities, TMX Group, who will talk about the opportunities created by the recent strategic investment by the TSX in the BSX, and provide his observations on the M&A trends in stock exchanges globally. Mr. Wojciechowski and Ms. Packwood will both be present at the event and participate in the sessions.
The afternoon will feature two panel sessions including a discussion of the benefits for Canadian companies of doing business in Bermuda, specifically the coming into force of the TIEA between Bermuda and Canada, and the implications of Canada’s Ministry of Finance’s recognition of the BSX. This panel will include Brendan Caldwell, CEO, Caldwell Securities, William Woods, CEO, W.Woods & Co and Steve Woodward, Partner, KPMG LLP.
The second panel will focus on the insurance industry, discussing captives, re-insurance and insurance-linked securities. Participants on this panel include Thomas McMahon, President, Cedar Management and Jason Crane, Partner, KPMG LLP.
There is no fee to attend this session, but pre-registration is essential. To register, please email Janet Keefe, jkeefe@knowledgesuites.com or call 416.849.1925.
ANOTHER TRIP!
You can setup your company in Bermuda and still get your back office work done in Halifax by qualified Canadians. You just have to fly in every now and then for Board meetings. That’s not too hard to take now id it?
that’s the way its always been done…..I don’t see anything to get excited about here. C’mon Packwood we want to see ‘shiny’ things
UH HUH! Because all the Bermudians who graduate yearly from college & university in Canada don’t count as qualified. JEEKUMS BYE! If I’d known that I would have told my mate to ask for the course that gives you the “qualified” papers.
This being mentioned I wonder why some Canadian professionals still have to take a certification test in Bermuda to get a position here if they are so qualified & believe it or not some fail the test & have to retake it.
Comments like your’s make me wonder why people like you even bother residing on an island full of BERMUDIANS.
Glad to see Bermuda is heading to Canada. Both countries share a deep and longstanding historic relationship. During the last year significant developments have occurred to reinforce that and attract and support new business opportunities from our Canadian business partners. The Captive business stands to benefit from developments and the Canadian market must constantly be engaged so they understand the opportunities that Bermuda offers.
Despite the double atrocity of the murder of Rebecca Middleton and the botched trial–Canadians still have a soft spot for our country and choose to visit, work and do business here.
Its only logical that Bermuda travels to Canada to thank the market for their business and to keep the market up to speed on developments that could be mutually beneficial.
This is called “customer service”.
