Prescription Refills: Former White’s Customers

October 10, 2012

The Department of Health and Bermuda Pharmacy Council have advised the public as to what steps should be taken by individuals who formerly filled prescriptions at White’s Pharmacy in Warwick or White’s Southside Pharmacy in St. David’s, which both closed earlier this summer.

A statement said: “It is recommended that individuals whose prescriptions were originally filled at either pharmacy attend their physician for a new written prescription.

“However, if this is not possible, patients should present the package or container of their prescription to the pharmacy of their choice, along with photo identification, and they will be able to buy an emergency five day supply of medication, as a temporary measure until a new written prescription can be provided by their physician.

“It is hoped that this arrangement will protect patients from the possibility of inappropriate extension of medications as well as lapses in medication compliance.

“The Pharmacy Council and the Department of Health appeal to both the medical community and the public for their cooperation and understanding in this situation.”

“The Pharmacy and Poisons Act 1979 actually provides the legal framework for managing this kind of situation,” explained Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Cheryl Peek-Ball. “The Act aims to ensure patient safety and continuity of care, as well as to minimize patient inconvenience in situations of emergency. The Act stipulates that a registered pharmacist can provide five days emergency supply to individuals in cases where the original prescription is not available to the pharmacist, providing there is ample evidence presented to the pharmacist of the ‘genuine and urgent need’ by the person.”

I was just wondering about this…I’m also wondering what they’re doing with all the drugs that were in White’s possession. I’m pretty sure they can’t sell that stuff off like the regular assets of the company-even to other pharmacies. They’ll probably just destroy it all…
