Tawny Frogmouths Start ‘Courting Process’
According to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo [BAMZ] newsletter, two Tawny Frogmouths are living in the zoo and have “begun the courting process.”
“Although we don’t have Tawny Frogmouth babies yet, it is our hope that we will in the future,” BAMZ said.
The Tawny Frogmouth is found throughout the Australian mainland, Tasmania and southern New Guinea. Although the Tawny Frogmouths share many similarities to owls, they are in fact a different species entirely.
Partners mate for life and once they build a nest together, and raising offspring is a team effort for Tawny Frogmouths. Both male and female take turns sitting on the eggs to incubate them until they hatch. Both parents then help to feed the chicks.
Tawny Frogmouths have anisodactyl feet, meaning that one toe faces backwards while the other three face forwards. These birds hunt at night and spend most of the day roosting on a log or tree branch.
