Tropical Storm Erin Forms In The Atlantic

[Updated] Tropical Depression Five formed late Wednesday night [Aug 14] in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean near Africa’s western coast, and it is expected to strengthen into a Tropical Storm.

This morning the U.S. National Hurricane Center said that the unnamed storm is located 55 miles southeast of the Cape Verde Islands and moving west-northwest at 14 mph with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said, “Satellite imagery indicates that the depression is getting better organized, and it is forecast to become a tropical storm later today.”

Update 11.28am: The Depression has now strengthened into Tropical Storm Erin, the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. The BWS said it is not expected to impact Bermuda, with its closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs due to be over 1500 nm to the ESE at 6am on Sunday [Aug 18].
