Local Martial Artists Win 16 Medals In Michigan

The students of the Champion Academy of Martial Arts and the Bermuda Taekwondo Association participated in the 24th Annual Michigan Cup International Championships held in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Saturday [Sept 28], bringing home an impressive 16 medals.

This group of athletes collected a total of 16 medals; 11 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze and the title of black belt grand champion was won by Bermuda Taekwondo Associations Master Iejah Caines, while an award was presented to Master Edmond Johnson of the Champion Academy of Martial Arts for co-directing the event.

The Michigan Cup is one of the largest Tae Kwon Do championships in the Great Lakes area and has evolved into an international event with participants from countries including Canada, Bermuda, Korea, and Mexico.

The local martial artists that competed in the event included Jose Dillas, Keiron Place, Arianna Smith, Brianna Smith, Nikai Dyer, Najee Pitt Clarke, Sahzay Ascento, Kenai Stowe and Zainab Suluki.

    Well done to all the participants, especially the little ones that were up against opponents bigger than then them. U all stood your grounds and did extremely well. The team represented Bermuda respectfully and demonstrated unified support both parents and athletes combined. Congrats Iejaa on earning the Grand Champion title…..having sparred with 2 opponents back to back…..a title well earned! I thoroughly enjoyed this experience! Outside of all the competitive stuff these youths and their parents were a lot of fun to be around-positive n upbeat spirits! Keep up the good work and hats off to u Master Johnson!!
