Premier Pleased With “Encouraging Feedback”

November 13, 2013

The Cabinet Office said “encouraging feedback” has been received regarding Bermuda and its offering as a leading business jurisdiction for Islamic Finance as a result of the recent October trip to the UK led by the Premier Craig Cannonier.

Premier Cannonier said he was pleased with the way the Island was received, not only at the World Islamic Economic Forum [WIEF] but also during special bilateral meetings held with representatives from member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council [GCC] in attendance at the Forum.

Premier Cannonier said, “During our time in the UK, we held what I would consider to be significant meetings with various countries including those in the GCC. I met with Her Excellency Mrs. Atifete Jahjaga, the President of the Republic of Kosovo; our discussions focused on sharing best practices in managing our intellectual capital.

“We hosted another meeting with H.E. Mr. Khalid bin Rashid bin Salim Al-Hamoudi Al-Mansouri and H.E. Abdulrahman Almutaiwee’s, Ambassador of the UAE. The meeting afforded us an opportunity to build on the foundation of our partnerships with our affiliate states in that region. We also have some special relationships with GCC member nations such as Qatar and Bahrain as we have signed TIEA’s with them.”

“As a result of being featured on the WIEF stage, Bermuda has created a positive buzz within the global financial sectors. Moreover, the Island has achieved its communication objective in reaching a broad international audience as evidenced by more than 350 global media, web and social media outlets which has highlighted and translated Bermuda’s story into six languages,” the Government said.

The Premier commented, “The importance of Bermuda’s presentation and subsequent discussions cannot be overstated. In an extremely competitive global arena, where one quarter of the world’s population is now Muslim, Bermuda has signaled to the world that we have a compelling value proposition for Islamic finance. “

He added, “We went to the Forum to accomplish two objectives. 1] To strengthen existing relationships and to establish new ones and 2] to stimulate foreign direct investment into the island.

“I’m more than satisfied that those two objectives were met. The next phase of our strategy will be to leverage the several points of interest in Bermuda and quickly bring them to mutually beneficial conclusions; ultimately resulting in jobs for Bermudians”.

“Bermuda’s presence at the WIEF was coordinated by the London Office in conjunction with the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and Embassies of the Islamic States. Through diplomatic relations, the London Office will continue with the efforts established at the Forum on behalf of the Bermuda Government,” the Government said.

LOL no different than Paula and crew that stumbled around in the dark bumping into and breaking heirlooms….the difference is that Cannonier has Uncle Bob and Cousin Grant in his left and right pockets….far cry from the amateurs that played monopoly with our money and our future ;-(

Maybe true to a degree but he is not the Government all by himself & does not have the dictatorial “I know everything” style of DrEB.

Unlike the PLP, who were absolutely clueless when it came to things to do with IB, the PLP has plenty of people within its ranks who are very in tune with IB.

Huge difference in style & ability between the OBA & PLP.

Who goes off to an extremely important IB trade show & takes Gombeys? How stupid was that?

Again, the more we keep trying to lure the “have’s”, the more the “have not’s” will continue to suffer. We can clearly see with the amount of violence that is going on that the have nots will continue to ruin our islands reputation as a safe haven. Sir, if you want to attract $$, please try and get our young people to utilize their skills, so we can create ambassadors for our country. Open up another technical school, renovate our youth centres, give clarence hill a boxing Gym… Save some of the “promotional $” that we are using to lure some of these “big spenders”…If we have a true reputation of being the “kind-friendly people” that we are known for, the big spenders will be easy to lure, whether it be tourist or IB professionals- peace…
