Kitson Family Donates $100K To “Why it Matters”
The Kitson Group made a $100,000 donation to the Why it Matters capital campaign, which is raising funds to renovate King Edward VII Memorial Hospital [KEMH]. The donation will go to support the new acute care wing, which is due to open next year, in 2014.
On behalf of the family, Mr Kirk Kitson, comments, “Today, December 18th, 2013, is the day my mother reaches the age of 95 and it is fitting, that with her encouragement and of my brother Richard, the Kitson Group should make this donation of $100,000 towards the cost of our new hospital.
“Like the Green family who gave $150,000 last week, we hope that, as our new hospital reaches completion, others who are able to do so will also give generously towards this worthy enterprise.”
He continued, “My father, Cdr Geoffrey Kitson, started Kitsons in 1947 with no capital at all as an insurance agency and over the years to follow started many ventures like the Bermuda Island cruise and Kitson Travel which no longer exist.
“Yet notwithstanding many setbacks, with the help of my son Scott and my daughter Lee, we have grown into a group of diverse companies today, which include Gorhams, Rosedon Hotel and Windsor Place, all of which are paid for and debt free.”
Jonathan Brewin, Chairman of Bermuda Hospital Board adds “I am deeply grateful for this wonderful donation from the Kitson family. Our new acute care wing heralds a new era of acute care in Bermuda and this generous support helps us towards our goal of delivering the highest quality of healthcare to Bermuda, every day.
“This is the season for giving, but unlike many Christmas gifts, this donation will have a lasting legacy in improved acute care services in a cutting edge facility which will benefit all our community in the decades to come.”
The new Acute Care facility has been carefully designed to support and enhance the Bermuda Hospitals Board’s objectives and healthcare delivery philosophy, with special attention to patient-focused care delivery, excellent patient outcomes and a positive environment for clinicians and staff. Departments moving to the new Acute Care Wing are: Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency, Oncology [Cancer Care], Dialysis, Acute Surgical Wards, Acute Medical Wards, Day Surgery and Security.
