Police: Sexual Assault Prevention Awareness
The police are “seeking to promote awareness to aid in the prevention against sexual assault.”
A police spokesperson said, “In keeping with its mandate to make Bermuda safer, the Bermuda Police Service [BPS] is seeking to promote awareness to aid in the prevention against sexual assault, and encourage a community where everyone feels safe and respected.
Prevention
“Everyone has a role to play in preventing sexual assault by:
- Respecting personal boundaries.
- Practicing and promoting clear, consent.
- Speaking up against inappropriate or abusive behaviour.
- Supporting healthy, respectful relationships.
Knowing Your Surroundings
“Stay aware of your surroundings when you’re out, and know where the nearest exits are. Keep your drink with you at all times, never leave it unattended, and, if possible, use a drink cover. If a drink tastes or looks unusual, dispose of it immediately.
Trust your instincts
“If a situation or person makes you feel uncomfortable, leave the area and seek assistance from someone you trust, or a member of the venue staff. If you see something concerning, speak up when it is safe to do so.
Understanding Consent
“Consent means a clear, voluntary, and informed ‘yes.’ It can be withdrawn at any time. A person cannot give consent if they are asleep, unconscious, or incapacitated by alcohol or drugs. Silence, lack of resistance, or previous consent does not mean consent. ‘No’ means no.”
Acting Detective Inspector Courtney Simmons of the vulnerable Persons Unit urged: “While confidential support is available through community support agencies, if you’ve experienced or witnessed a sexual assault, please make an initial report by calling 911. Alternatively, you are encouraged to visit any Police Station and speak with an officer.
“You will be treated with dignity and respect. Any and all information you provide, will be afforded the strictest of confidence. Together, we can help prevent sexual assault by promoting respect, consent, and personal responsibility. Every action can make a difference.”
