Looking Back On 2013: The Year In Photos
To mark the end of yet another year, Bernews has gathered some of the images from 2013 depicting a few of the many events that took place. Ranging from holidays, to sports, to cruise ships, collisions and more, the past year saw numerous activities take place on our 21 square mile island. This is, of course, only a tiny fraction of the photos we posted throughout the year, and for all our photos click here.
January: The year started off with a giant message written in seaweed the sand at John Smith’s Bay

January: Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s superyacht arrives in Bermuda
February: The island cheers on Nahki Wells whose team made it to Wembley for the Capital One Cup
February: One of St George’s unofficial ambassadors, a cat named “Flea”, passes away
February: A Sunwing plane diverts to Bermuda after passengers are alleged to be smoking onboard
March: The Green family purchase the old Sonesta property on South Shore
March: The Annual Sports Awards recognized the island’s top athletes
March: Earth Hour is celebrated at City Hall
April: Premier Cannonier measures a 10.5 foot kite on Good Friday during Kitefest
April: Canadian astronaut Commander Chris Hadfield tweets a photo of Bermuda from space
April: Delta’s inaugural flight from LaGuardia in New York received welcome sprays of water
April: Pro basketball player Lisa Leslie visits for the Women in Sports expo
May: A taxi crashes, and lands upside down only a few yards away from the water in Southampton
May: Ashley Simmons launches the Bermuda Water Taxi service
May: The annual “Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres” was held in Hamilton
May: Aquarium staff save the life of a baby turtle that was poisoned after eating coral polyps
May: The 1063ft long Norwegian Breakaway cruise ship, the largest to ever visit the island, arrives
May: A car driver smashes through a wall on Harbour Road, landing overboard
May: 30 visiting yachts taking part in the Arc Europe and Atlantic Cup rallies stop in Bermuda
May: Rev. Nicholas Dill becomes the new Bishop of Bermuda
May: Tyler Butterfield and Rose-Anna Hoey win the May 24th half marathon
May: Runner Thomas Smith proposed to Elizabeth Simmons at the end of the May 24th race
May: The Premier follows tradition, dancing with the Gombeys in the Bermuda Day Parade
June: Male volunteers spent time at Elliot Primary School for their annual Men’s Reading Challenge
June: Native Americans made their way to Bermuda for the Pow Wow in St Davids
June: The second annual Highland Games was held at the Saltus School field in Pembroke
June: Johnny Barnes celebrated his 90th birthday
June: Katherine Arnfield was crowned the new Miss Bermuda
July: The World Cup Blue Marlin Championship is held in Bermuda
July: The Norwegian Breakaway cruise ship berthed in Dockyard hosts a fireworks display for July 4th
July: The Bermuda Regiment fired a 21 gun salute to mark the birth of the Royal Baby
July: Bermuda hosts athletes from 20 islands in the 2013 Island Games
August: Cup Match ends in a draw, and Somerset retains the Cup
August: Ryan Davidge and Andrew Osborne [FB16] took line honours in the Around the Island race
August: Artistic creations grace Horseshoe Bay during the annual Sand Sculpture contest
August: A collision in Smiths resulted in one car being wedged on top of the other

October: A fire breaks out at the old Teen Services building on Cedar Avenue in Pembroke
October: Firefighters wear pink shirts in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness
November: Bermuda hosts international visitors who came to see the solar eclipse visible from the island
November: A snowy owl, which are rarely seen this far South, is spotted in Bermuda
November: A protest march was held over the planned closure of the Lamb Foggo Urgent Care Centre
December: Ginny Ferson was sworn in, becoming the first female Deputy Governor of Bermuda
December: Following the death of Nelson Mandela, a mural was painted on the Chewstick building

December: A casino themed entry won the Christmas Boat Parade
December: David Soares 1000lb bluefin tuna marks the largest one ever caught in Bermuda waters
