January 21, 2014

Over this past weekend, a few games were played in Women’s B League and Men’s Hockey Group with the Bluebirds and Wildcats recording wins, while two other games resulted in draws.

Women’s B League

Bluebirds vs Canaries: Final Score: 2-0 to Bluebirds

Both teams played with great sportsmanship as they spread the ball quickly up and down the pitch with Bluebirds settling into their game much quicker than Canaries through a field goal in the 3rd minute by Jill Finnigan from a dribble into the circle from the right side and a flick into the goal pass the Canaries ‘keeper’. ‘Keeper’ Tami Ray kept the Bluebirds attack at bay, and despite Canaries great efforts they couldn’t find the equalizer and the score remained at 1-0 to Bluebirds in the first half.

The second half continued the same way as the first half. Bluebirds’ defense did extremely well in keeping the ball out of the danger zone and with ‘keeper’ Vicki Johnston preventing execution of several attempts by Canaries’ attacking and midfield line. A text book play by Bluebirds’ Laura Bardgett who passed the ball from the left side to the right side to find Maria Harris who found an unmarked Jo-Ann Smith entering the circle to slam home a field goal into the far side netting behind the Canaries ‘keeper’ in the 52nd minute and the game ended 2-0 to Bluebirds.

Ravens B vs Longtails B: Final Score: 1-1

Ravens’ Isabella Boonstra scored a field goal in the 4th minute.

Budgies’ Jasalle Smith scored a field goal in the 66th minute from a shot by Keishae Robinson which deflected high off the Raven’s ‘keeper’ Joanne Bielby pads onto the stick of Smith.

Swallows vs Wildcats B: Final Score: 3-1 to Wildcats

Wildcats’ Ryce Trott scored a field goal in the 19th minute from a rebound shot by Alecia Holder. Wildcats’ Zina Jones scored a field goal in the 32nd minute from a bouncy ball she received on the base line that got by Swallows’ ‘keeper’ Donna Nicholson. Swallows’ Liz Stewart scored a field goal in the 60th minute from a dribble from the 25 metre line through several players entering in the ‘D’ and a hard shot that hit the inside left corner of the goal.

Wildcats’ Pier Simons scored a field goal in the 66th minute from a dribble down the right side. She entered the circle and her shot at goal was stopped by ‘keeper’ Nicholson, but her persistence allowd her to score and a victory to Wildcats of 3-1.

Wildcats had better passing with Trott and Holder holding the midfield well. Swallows didn’t play up to their potential and let in a couple of goals through loose defensive play. Swallows had their chances to score, but didn’t convert when the ball got into the ‘D’.

Men’s Hockey

BHF National Team vs BHF All Stars: Final Score: 3-3

Both teams started with 8 in their respective squads, with the relatively young BHF National team’s ranks being bolstered to 9 by seasoned veteran Nigel Deane early in the first half. With neither team having a goalie, both teams opted to play with ‘kicking-backs’ who are permitted to use their feet to protect the goal, but otherwise play as field players. This made for an exciting match, with many scoring opportunities on less protected goals.

BHF All Stars’ Mark Finnigan converted a hat-trick of field goals in the 30th, 37th and 47th minutes from several opportunities in the opposition’s ‘D’. With Deane’s team up 2-0, BHF National team player Donovan Simmons scored a field goal in the 40th minute from a dribble by Tyler Smith who crossed to Simmons at the top of the circle who shot at goal.

BHF National team junior player Nathan Simons, stationed at the left corner post collected a field goal into the unprotected goal as a deflection off a wide shot by Nigel Deane. BHF National Tyler Smith scored a field goal seconds before the whistle in the 70th minute assisted by a Joshua Thompson’s shot at the goal, which rebounded off the Allstars kicking back’s foot, and Smith converted as a result and the game ended all tied up.

Juniors Hemijah Bean and Nathan Simons played an extraordinary game as noted by the more experienced players on the BHF National and All Stars teams.
