Video: BF&M Takes ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

August 26, 2014

After being challenged by their Canadian colleagues, BF&M has taken part in the ALS Ice Bucket challenge, as a group.

In addition to the Ice Bucket Challenge, the company will hold a Denim Day fundraiser on Friday, and all funds will be donated to ASL research.

The viral phenomenon features people, from around the world, dumping ice water over their heads to raise money for ALS [commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease], which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Numerous locals have taken part in the challenge, including Premier Michael Dunkley who posted the video on his Facebook page and challenged Governor George Fergusson, who accepted the challenge.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has resulted in a substantial increase of donations, with the ALS Association saying that as of Sunday, August 24, they have received $70.2 million in donations compared to $2.5 million during the same time period last year.

I still don’t know why there has to be a gimmick to just donating money…..

    • sswhite says:

its deeper than that JohnBoy…take the leap to finding out what these ice and fire rituals are truly about.

    • Bermuda Man says:

Yea, do your research on the matter and you will find that only 7% of your donation actually goes to the research of ALS. 10% went to saleries and 18% went to fund raising, to make more money!

I’ll post a link to a youtube video that explains this fraud!

      Its all about making money!

  2. Yes I says:

I believe that it was one method out of many to raise awareness on a relatively unknown condition. Outside of it being a “gimmick” as you describe, one could view that it brings people together all for a good cause. Just my two cents.

    • Be openminded says:

I’m glad you said that, to each his own. I too have completed the challenge and it prompted me to research ALS and its effects. Awareness is key as it opens the door to effect change and possibly bring about cures.

      • JohnBoy says:

There always seems to be “I will do _____ and you give me_____”

I would prefer for people to say straight up, “I’m collecting money for____ would you like to donate?” or in this case I’ll simply donate to the cause.

To each his own I guess….

        • CJO says:

Well how many people would have donated to this cause having said just that? I’m going to guess considerably less going by the 68 million dollar increase in donations after the challenge. If a gimmick is necessary to get peoples attention, so be it. Its all for a good cause.

          • JohnBoy says:

Just how many are giving or are most just getting a good splash and appearing on youtube to impress their friends??

            • CJO says:

Well the challenge is not all about the donation its also about getting awareness out there for the disease. A week ago a lot of the people doing it probably didn’t know what ALS was, now its rolling off everyone’s tongue daily. So donation or not, I’d say its a win for the cause.
