Students Receive 2014 Young Citizens Awards

This afternoon [Nov 20] the Department of Child and Family Services hosted their 11th Annual Young Citizen Awards Ceremony and Luncheon at the Fairmont Southampton. Today’s ceremony coincided with the United Nations Universal Day of the Child.

Awards were presented to students from public and private schools who demonstrate exemplary citizenship. This year 41 students from primary, middle and high schools received awards from the Minister of Community, Culture and Sports Wayne Scott.

Minister Scott said it was, “A fitting opportunity to recognize these students who at young age already understand that in order for our country to succeed, we need citizens, young and old, to share in helping each other to be the best we can be. These students are among the best and most sincere in their commitment to helping others.”

Minister Scott added, “The students we are honouring today are shining examples of young people who will be invited to be part of assisting in the development of a National Youth Policy. It is our intention to keep them involved in mapping out their future.”

Bermuda College student, Nikari Furbert provided a brief synopsis of the history the Universal Day of the Child. She also congratulated the students and added, “These students are compassionate and helpful to their peers. They respect diversity and different views and opinions. They are true ambassadors of peace and harmony.”

Director of Child and Family Services, Alfred Maybury, thanked the parents for their support urged them remain attentive to what is going in their children’s lives.

    Congratulations to all! So refreshing to see young motivated youth in the news. Sometimes we forget how important it is to recognize our youth for their positive contributions to society and not for their negative actions.
