Saltus Shavees Raise Over $196,000 For Charity

March 17, 2015

Proving the adage that ‘bald is beautiful,’ Saltus Grammar School students, staff, and families who recently took part in their head shaving event raised over $196,600 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

The event was held on Friday, March 13, 2015 for the ninth year in a row [eighth year as an officially registered site], with 108 Saltus Primary and Secondary students and their relatives, along with three staff members, shaving their heads to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which focuses its work on cancer research.

According to Tara Soares, Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre [BCHC] Executive Director, $48,000 of the funds raised at St. Baldrick’s events in Bermuda will go to BCHC’s SunSmart Program.

In addition, Locks of Love also benefited as a number of Saltus Primary girls, along with an Upper Primary teacher and a parent, had their hair cut at the event to donate to the organization, a non-profit which provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medically related hair loss.

A spokesperson for Saltus said, “Many thanks to the hair stylists and barbers who volunteered their time and expertise for this worthwhile cause. They came from TK Hair, Ginny’s Salon, The Hideaway Hair & Beauty Salon, The Cutting Room, Willow Stream Spa, and Strands, plus a barber from the Bermuda Regiment.”

Does Sunsmart really need $48,000. How does that break down?

Well done Saltus! Mrs. Renaud, Director of the Upper Primary Department, should be commended for not only championing the cause at Saltus, but also for shaving her head and leading by example for her students.
