Health Minister Presents Long Service Awards

June 4, 2015

Minister of Health, Seniors and Environment Jeanne Atherden presented at the Long Service Awards ceremony yesterday evening at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, to recognize the dedication and long service of the Officers of the Department of Health and the Ministry of Health, Seniors and Environment.

Minister Atherden said, “It is vitally important to periodically stop and say thank you to our colleagues and friends who have worked so hard for the people of Bermuda and to let them know that we appreciate and value the work that they do.

“As members of the Civil Service you are immersed in a culture of service, a culture framed by the phrase “At your service Bermuda”. Indeed the Department of Health lists Service as one of its core values. It is my belief that people like you, who are of service, are change agents in this world. Whether you realize it or not, you are the builders of Bermudian society.

“Every day you have been striving to make a difference in the lives of others and helping them to lead healthy lives. Helping the people of Bermuda, anticipating and meeting their health needs and caring for them are the hallmarks of the services that you have rendered.

“Many times, I am sure, you have put the needs of the people you serve before yours and those of your families. Your sacrifice has been worth it. The fruits of your labours are all around you. Communicable disease is under control. For the most part Bermuda is the envy of the world and our standard of living is second to none.

“My primary goal this evening is to sincerely say “well done and thank you” but I am also intent upon asking you to please continue to give your all to serve the people of this country. Bermuda needs your ongoing service to combat chronic disease which is a very real and growing threat to the well-being of our society.

“This will be your greatest challenge because only by changing lifestyles will you succeed. I am confident that if you approach this challenge with an attitude of caring and service, one that strengthens your relationships with people, that they will be receptive to the need to change, and they will change. Your work performed with an attitude of caring and service will be critical.

“So thank you again for all that you have done, and the spirit with which you have served the people of Bermuda. Keep up the good work,” concluded Minister Atherden.
