Dr. Barbara Ball Health Scholarships Awarded

July 15, 2018

The Ministry of Health announced the awardees of the 2018 Dr. Barbara Ball Public Health Scholarships, noting that this year there were eight new recipients.

“The Ministry receives a large number of applications every year. The calibre of applicants is very high, making the award increasingly competitive as there are many deserving candidates,” the Ministry said.

“In making the awards, the committee considers a combination of factors including academic achievement, financial need and public health priority of the professional discipline.”

Scholarships are offered for study in a range of health professions that support public health, with priority given to nursing, allied health and social work.

The Minister of Health, Kim Wilson said, “I am extremely proud that we can support our young people seeking careers in health professions that support public health.

“This is aligned with the spirit I believe Dr Barbara Ball would have wanted, and I know our scholars are honoured to be associated with her noble name.

“We have a shortage of health professionals in Bermuda, particularly in specific areas that benefit public health, and we encourage our young people to consider professions in the health sector as they are enormously fulfilling and there are a great many job opportunities.”

  1. What says:

Congrats to all! Getting financial help for school is great! But were there no male recipients?

  2. Congrats to all receivers of scholarships and financial awards.
    This is your bright moment.
You will all be great ambassadors for your country and academic successes for yourselves!!
    What a positive moment!!

  3. Gee says:

Congrats to the young women who have been successful and to their parents.
    Not one MALE.
    Not one concern.
Not one action will be taken to improve and find a balance. why? Because the Govt. is more concerned about the OBA.

    • Double S says:

All Government scholarships were awarded to only one demographic of the island.

This is the PLP’s idea of ‘diversity.’

      • Earth watch police says:

        Always good to see diversity.

    • watching says:

Clearly there are males that did received government scholarships. The Barbara Ball scholarships are all health related and while it is disappointing no males were awarded, it is incorrect to say that males have not been awarded government funding.

      • Double S says:

What about diversity of our population demographics? Between these scholarships and the Ministry’s ones announced late last week there is very little, if any at all, diverse recipients.

Or is this simply another one of the PLP ad their supporters ‘diversity for thee, but nor me’ moments?

        • Double S says:

*’diversity for thee, but not for me’

        • watching says:

To make a judgment one would have to know the demographics and qualifications of those who applied. Without knowing that, we cannot speak to any bias towards one or the other.

          • Politricks says:

Sorry, but you and your team never afforded such explanations when you whined and moaned about more than one ‘token’ person receiving these scholarships under the previous administration.

If it was the other way around you would never, ever, come up with such an excuse as you did above. Instead it were the other way around you and yours would automatically jump to the ‘racist, white supremacist, oppressors’ without giving it a second thought.

          • Question says:

Ah, of course. Suddenly you completely understand why the racial makeup of a group of people might be different than the makeup of the general population. Suddenly you can explain it very clearly.

  4. Comfortably numb says:

So much for diversity of race and gender! Had the OBA awarded all scholarships the ‘other way’ Tweed would be marching, the “hunger striker” and her protein shakes would be flown in from Philadelphia and Rolfe would be complaining.
