Football: Oxford United Sign Jonte Smith
Oxford United have signed 24-year-old Bermudian footballer Jonte Smith, with the club saying “Jonte has a fantastic attitude and you can’t do much more as a trialist than score five in two games.”
The club’s announcement said, “The Bermuda international has made a big impression at Lewes with 56 goals in 121 games in the Isthmian League and netted twice for the U’s in a behind closed doors friendly at Reading on Tuesday, having previously scored a hat trick against us on trial for another club earlier in the season.
“Having agreed to leave Lewes by mutual consent Jonte became a free agent and joins the U’s on a contract until the end of the season.
Head Coach Karl Robinson said: “He is very raw but he is a goalscorer and we think he deserves longer to try and impress us. Jerome Sinclair signed yesterday so we have added to our options up front.
“This one may be seen as a bit leftfield but Jonte has a fantastic attitude and you can’t do much more as a trialist than score five in two games! Chris Allen was certainly impressed so now it is up to him to make the most of this chance.”
Jonte Smith said, “First of all I want to thank Lewes for all they have done for me and wish them well. The chance to join Oxford was such a great one for me and now it is up to me to keep scoring goals, work hard, and do the best I can to make it a success.”
