‘Total Of 18,083 Stops Over Holiday Weekend’

April 14, 2020

Last night [April 13] the Minister of National Security Wayne Caines provided an update during the daily Covid-19 press briefing.

The Minister discussed matters to do with the Joint Community Advisory Check Points and provided a general update regarding the Government approved Quarantine Locations.

Minister Caines said, “Firstly, I’d like to touch on some concerns regarding the numbers of people who do not seem to be adhering to the Shelter in Place guidelines. While the majority of the population remain compliant, we still have instances in our community where people simply are blatantly not obeying the regulations.

“Over the weekend the public will be aware that Bermuda Police Service were considerably busy during the holiday period responding to a number of issues to do with loud music, numerous gatherings of multiple people, and reports of individuals moving about on our roads and in restricted areas.

“The BPS indicated that over the last week, they have executed 32 arrests. Twenty-one of these were curfew related and 11 were for non-essential movement. There were also 111 warnings issued for breaches to the guidelines.

“I want to take this opportunity to remind the public that under the current Shelter in Place guidelines, they are allowed to move about for legitimate reasons only during the hours of 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

“Meanwhile, over the Easter holiday weekend the Royal Bermuda Regiment were deployed across the island providing support in a variety of capacities. In partnership with the BPS the Royal Bermuda Regiment Community Advisory Points recorded a total of 18,083 stops over the holiday weekend. The breakdown is as follows:

  • Good Friday – 5,056
  • Saturday – 10,025
  • Easter Sunday – 3,002

“Also this weekend, the Bermuda Coast Guard conducted maritime patrols in the east and west ends, covering all harbours and most inlets. On Sunday various vessels including 10 registered fishing vessels were stopped.

“Also, the RBR intercepted kayakers at Abbots Cliff in Harrington Sound, and swimmers in St. George’s were issued advisories in keeping with Shelter in Place regulations. Turning the Government run Quarantine facilities.

“Currently we have around 215 individuals in five facilities. I just wish to extend our appreciation to Bermuda Police Service Reserve Officers who are working with our Disaster Risk Reduction Mitigation or DRRM Team at the quarantine locations.

“I also wish to take a moment to commend the members of our DRRM Team – who for the past four weeks have done a yeoman’s job in managing these sites, often under incredible demands and strain.

“Throughout it all, they have demonstrated extreme professionalism and integrity, and as Minister, I am very thankful for their service. This week we will continue with the Essential care package drop offs which will take place tomorrow, Tuesday April 14 and Friday April 17. The drop off time is from 1pm – 5pm.

“Again, the essential care package should contain key items such as toiletries, medication and essential foods, inclusive of any special dietary items.”

    • Toodle-oo says:

Delivering hot cross buns to their squeezes and feeding feral cats !

  3. Dunn juice says:

Nice that people are out walking and walking there dogs. But as a result there’s more dog sheet on the roads, please pick up your sheet.

    • dog mess says:

Oh my goodness I noticed the same people please pick up after your dog

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

That is a bit of a deceptive number. How many were the same vehicle stopped outbound & on the return trip? Saturday was a normal shopping day for half the population. Of course many of them would be out. Friday & Sunday essential service people would be going to & from work. They get stopped too.

So, how many were out for no good reason? Deduct all those who were out for valid reasons to be sure there were too many out for no good reason at all.

Very valid comment and good point.

    • Opinions Matter says:

Correct. Numbers without context can be manipulated for any definition.

    • Steven says:

With Caines, its always a numbers game….You will see when the S$@t hits the ceiling, he will point to the number of people out in the roads, essential, going to shop, or not!

    • Opinions Matters says:

You are correct. Numbers without context don’t mean much. Include the number of people and categories they have exempted and you have a large percentage that are allowed to drive around.

    • Um.... says:

So half the number. It’s still a considerable amount of movement (both directions).

  5. Bs says:

Who cares how many people got stopped really, when are we going to have the much touted aggressive testing so we can develop some useful data so we can at least partially open back up when the time is right . You probably don’t care to much as you and most employed by government are getting full pay cheques whilst many are expected to survive on a fraction (500$) of their normal income.

    • Micro says:

If you’re even fortunate enough to get that much!

  6. Stevie says:

Sounds a bit far fetched to me.

  7. Bobby Jones says:

Lock all of the Of the 154 who were curfew breakers, non-essential movement and the 111 warnings issued for breaches to the guidelines. Don’t let them out for as long as this takes. Shame on all these idiots, let them rot.

  8. rodney smith says:

On just a short trip out , a person could be stopped up to four or more times . A big thanks to all those who are working to keep us safe .
