Column: What’s Your Why? Power Of Purpose
[Opinion column written by Agathe Holowatinc]
Today I felt compelled to send you a message about “What’s Your Why? The Power of Purpose.”
This is a simple life hack/success hack that promises a significant return on your investment of time you spent working on it. You can sort this success hack out in minutes with focused attention, and it will impact your life in a major way and quite possibly get you exactly the results you are seeking in your body composition, nutrition, overall health, or any goal in life really.
Margie Warrell, bestselling author, speaker and contributor to Forbes Magazine, writes:
“If you’ve ever faced a significant crisis in your life you’ll have experienced the power of purpose to tap reserves of energy, determination and courage you likely didn’t know you had. Your mission was clear. Your goal was compelling. Your focus was laser-like. Your potential was tapped. The power of purpose is similar to the energy of light focused through a magnifying glass. Diffused light has little use, but when its energy is concentrated—as through a magnifying glass—that same light can set fire to paper. Focus its energy even more, as with a laser beam, and it has the power to cut through steel. Likewise, a clear sense of purpose enables you to focus your efforts on what matters most, compelling you to take risks and push forward regardless of the odds or obstacles.” – Margie Warrell, Forbes, October 30, 2013.
So I ask you: what do you want to be healthy for? What do you want that body composition goal for? Why do you want to give up eating this or that? Why do you want to start on a new path towards eating and drinking to fuel and nourish your body? What do you want your blood results to look like next time you’re at the doctor and why? Why do you care to no longer carry unwanted and unnecessary weight on you?
Why? Why? Why?
Whatever your particular goal, having a strong and solid why makes a difference! Without a proper purpose, vision and motivation, our chances of successfully achieving our goals and realising our passions are greatly diminished. In other words, information alone is rarely what motivates people to up-level their health and diets and lifestyles.
It is necessary that we feel inspired – totally compelled – to make different choices, adopt better eating habits and envision a bold – and perhaps even radical – new future for ourselves.
This is a key ingredient that’s missing in most diets, workouts, and nutrition fads. Don’t you agree?
The power of why is that it enables us to focus our efforts on what matters most, compelling us to take risks and push forward despite the odds or obstacles.
Having a strong why lifts our heart, our mind, and our spirit towards eating healthier today – it lines us up with our goal, or puts us in alignment with it and what we value and dream of for ourselves. There is no doubt in my mind that it directly impacts our day-to-day decision making.
Feeling focused, motivated and totally, wildly driven to get our why positively impacts our daily eating choices, physical activity, rest, our stick-to-it-ness, etc, and ultimately it impacts our potential for achieving optimal health and that ideal weight and body composition in the short and long term.
I feel like there is a crisis of purpose and meaning for so many people in Bermuda as relates to health, disease prevention through better nutrition, and body composition goals. Yes, a crisis of purpose. So many people do not have a compelling why. There are lots of “I should do,” but a crisis when it comes to why I will do.
In my Integrative Nutrition Health Coaching sessions, I help my clients uncover their why – that is, help them establish the purpose and motivation behind why they’re pursuing becoming a more healthy and vibrant them.
It is a must in our work together. My dear people: you are far more likely to reach any goal that you have set for yourself when you can clearly articulate your reasons for wanting to achieve it.
Here is a portion of that coaching session work. Please feel free to use it! Take some time today and think about one of your top goals in your life for 2020 or beyond and do the work I’ve set out below.
Really play full out and write every single reason down that pours out from your heart, mind and soul for why you want it. Then see for yourself if this exercise makes a difference in your decisions today, tomorrow and this week.
Refer to your why often. Start visualizing it. Let your why flood you with emotions, daily if possible. Put up a vision board – or “manifestation plaques” as I call mine – as relates to your goal and your why so that you can see it every single day. Go ahead, try it!
Feel free to share this with someone you care about. Stay safe and healthy everyone – and live with purpose!
