February 14, 2022

Hamilton Princess & Beach Club will be hosting Jahdre Hayward as their Chef in Residence for its Black History Month celebrations.

A spokesperson said, “Distinguished Bermudian chef, Jahdre Hayward, will be Chef in Residence at Hamilton Princess & Beach Club for the resort’s Black History Month celebrations later this month.

“An award winning chef, Jahdre was raised by his grandparents in Bermuda before he moved to the USA to live with his aunt and uncle at the age of 15. His culinary career began at The Savoy in London where he worked his way up to Chef de Partie – other London restaurants worked at include Rules, Oxo Tower, Novelli in the City and The Ritz.

“He met his now wife, Amanda, in London and together their culinary careers took them to Australia where they remained for six years before returning to the UK to open Haywards in Epping, Essex in 2013. Haywards has gone on to receive broad acclaim and a number of accolades, including 3 AA Rosettes in 2019.

“On Saturday, 26th of February, Chef Jahdre will join Hamilton Princess’ Sous Chef, Richard Zuill, on a Back to Roots tour of some of the hotel’s local providers – including JaVaughn Dill’s Vegetable Market, Wadson’s Farm and the Passion Fields hives at the hotel’s Beach Club – and rediscover the beautiful locally grown produce and locally made products of Bermuda.

“Freshly inspired, the two chefs will be creating a special menu for an exclusive dinner where they will share their experiences and impressions. Spaces at this event are limited to 30 people and are priced at $84 each (plus gratuities) for a three course, family-style dinner. A wine pairing is also available for an additional $60 and will feature Black owned vineyards. Members of the public can follow the tour of the island on Instagram by following @HappeningsAtThePrincess where more details will be shared.

“The hotel’s famous Sunday Brunch offering is taking on an Afro Beats theme throughout the month of February but those dining there on the 27th will be in for a special treat as some of Chef Jahdre’s signature items and menu highlights will be included on the menu for that day. The Chef will also be hosting the event in person and circulating the dining room for those who would like to meet him.”

Jahdre Hayward said, “I am honoured to be coming home to Bermuda for such a special occasion. The Hamilton Princess & Beach Club is an icon of Bermuda and I can’t think of anywhere better to serve up my first meal on the island since I was a boy. The Black History Month celebration events are a great way to embrace the local culture and celebrate the successes of our fellow islanders.”

Shawn Lekki, Director of Food & Beverage at Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, said, “We are extremely proud to be hosting Jahdre’s return to Bermuda. The menu that he, Martha Dismont and Gary Phillips have come up with for the Black History Month dinner is phenomenal and I think it’s going to be a night to remember. We look forward to celebrating with everyone.”

Richard Zuill, Sous Chef at Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, said, “It’s been a privilege to work with Jahdre Hayward, in the run up to the Black History Month events. He’s a great role model for young Bermudians who are interested in careers in the kitchen and I know that our kitchen team are looking forward to learning as much from him as possible during his residency.”

The spokesperson said, “A portion of the proceeds for all of the Black History Month events will be donated to the charities of choice of Martha Dismont and Gary Phillips: Family Centre and Bermuda College Foundation, respectively. Early bookings for all of the Black History Month events are strongly encouraged to avoid disappointment.
