Photos: Dr. Matthews-Paynter 100th Birthday
Dr. Dorothy Matthews-Paynter is celebrating her 100th birthday, and a special event was held at the Victor Scott School — where she was born back in 1922 when the property was a house — to mark the momentous occasion.
The longest serving beautician in the island, Dr. Matthews-Paynter still works at her salon, Dottie’s Unisex on King Street, and many would say her youthful appearance is an excellent promotion for her own salon.
Those in attendance at the special birthday celebration included her family and friends, students, Minister of Public Works Lt/Col David Burch, Junior Minister for Social Development, Seniors & Home Affairs Senator Lindsay Simmons and Premier David Burt.
“The Life and Times of a Bermudian Legend, Dr Dorothy Louise Matthews-Paynter” book notes that, “She started out without secondary education, but later settled on her true, vocation in life that gave her the opportunity to travel widely and enrich her existence.
“In her younger years, she began experimenting with hairdressing in her Grandma’s kitchen, and perfected her skills through studies at Apex College in the USA, to become a professional in her field, managing her own business.
“After marrying with four children, the opportunity finally came to embark on a GED course, at a newly, constructed adult education school. This move set her on a path of empowerment that motivated her ambitious mind, to progress from GED to PhD.”
Sending congratulations and lots of love to you , Mrs Matthews.
Back in the day when you were getting established I was on the team that helped get your supplies flown in from the US.
You were just as special then as you are now.
Looking great !
Happy 100th Birthday Dr. Matthews-Paynter. You have helped to restore my hair and I appreciate your expertise and experience. You are wonderful. God bless you.
