Cabinet Changes, Departments, Old/New & More

Two people were removed and one person was added with changes made to the areas of Youth, Culture, Sport, Transport and the Cabinet Office as the Premier announced changes to Cabinet yesterday, and a more in-depth look at the adjustments is below

Specific Changes

The changes made by the Premier involved five people in total; two people being removed, one added, and two other Ministers adjusting responsibilities, with the changes affecting the areas of Youth, Culture, Sport, Transport and the Cabinet Office.

  • Youth, Culture and Sport moved from Dr Ernest Peets to Owen Darrell
  • Transport moved from Lawrence Scott to Wayne Furbert
  • Cabinet Office responsibilities moved from Wayne Furbert to Vance Campbell
  • Lawrence Scott & Dr Ernest Peets will no longer serve in Cabinet
  • Senator Owen Darrell enters Cabinet
  • Size of Cabinet decreases from 13 to 12

Transport

There is a new Minister of Transport, with Wayne Furbert — who has served as the Minister of Transport before — taking over from Lawrence Scott. According to the Government’s organizational chart, the areas below fall under the Ministry of Transport:

  • Ministry HQ
  • Transport Control
  • Marine and Ports
  • Public Transportation
  • Bermuda Shipping and Maritime Authority
  • Bermuda Airport Authority
  • Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority

Youth, Culture and Sports

There is a also a new Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport with Senator Owen Darrell entering Cabinet for the first time, taking over from Dr Ernest Peets. According to the Government’s organizational chart, the areas below fall under the the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport:

  • Ministry HQ
  • Youth Sport and Recreation
  • Culture
  • National Sports Centre
  • The Bermuda Sport Anti-Doping Authority
  • Parish Councils

Cabinet Office

The Cabinet Office responsibilities have moved from Wayne Furbert to Minister of Tourism Vance Campbell, with the Premier saying Minister Campbell will “add to his duties the responsibility for those departments previously under the Ministry for the Cabinet Office.” According to the Government’s organizational chart, the areas below fall under the Cabinet Office:

  • Communications
  • Ministry HQ
  • Post Office
  • Office of the Project Management and Procurement
  • Information and Digital Technologies

Old Cabinet

A look at the 13 person Cabinet that existed before the Cabinet shuffle is below. There were no changes to the areas of Social Development/Seniors, Education, Home Affairs, National Security, Economy/Labour. Finance, Public Works, Health and Legal Affairs; and while Tourism remains under the same Minister, additional areas were added under the same Minister.

New Cabinet

A look at the 12 person Cabinet following the Cabinet shuffle, please note that as of this time it has not been formally announced what change, if any, is made to the title of Minister of Tourism, so the title below is not the official one.

Senate Leader Also Changed

While not a change to Cabinet, there was also a slight adjustment made to the Senate with the Premier announcing that Senator Owen Darrell will “also assume the role of Government leader in the Senate” – a position previously held by Dr Ernest Peets.

      Chairman of the National Sports Centre is not a paid position…other than the $50 per meeting that any other volunteer government board member gets.
