Advanced Poll For Incapacitated Voters

September 21, 2023 | 5 Comments

An Advanced Poll for people eligible to vote in the Constituency 8 Smith’s South bye-election but who are unable “by reason either of illness, infirmity, or disability to travel to the election room on Polling Day” will be held on September 28th.

The PLP’s Mischa Fubler and the OBA’s Ben Smith will run in the bye-election, which was called due to the resignation of Cole Simons, with the bye-election to be held on October 5th.

The advisory about the Advanced Poll was contained in yesterday’s official notices, which stated, “An Advanced Poll will be held at the St, Patrick’s Church Hall, Smith’s on September 28, 2023, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. for electors eligible to vote in the Constituency 8 Smith’s South bye-election but who are unable or likely to be unable, by reason either of illness, infirmity, or disability, to travel to the election room on Polling Day.

“In order to vote at this advanced poll, incapacitated electors are required to request a certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner certifying their incapacity. Application for these certificates should be made at the office of the registered medical practitioner of choice.

“The registered medical practitioner will forward the certificate to the Parliamentary Registrar prior to the closing date set out by the Parliamentary Registrar.”

This seems a bit strange, is this normal for an election/ bye election

Is this a way to get votes from people at MAWI?

Am figuring you don’t know if you will be ill ahead of time, if you know you will be ill then you are likely ill already for the advanced poll. If you are disabled, if you are infirm, then you are likely to still be disabled on the Advanced polling day.

I agree if gives people optionality to be able to vote on either or days, just wondering how many people would it include? Can we get a number on the day and the cost of providing the advance polling day?

The do not vote…plus MWI is in Devonshire so not in the correct constituency..How do visually impaired people vote? Just asking as they too have a right but dont know how that works

    • Joe Bloggs says:

The visually impaired votes by telling a proxy how to mark the ballot. The proxy can be a person the visually impaired voter trusts and who is acceptable to the invigilators or a Justice of the Peace who is in attendance at the voting station

When will Bermudians overseas be able to vote. How many students are disenfranchised because they cannot vote remotely?

If banking can be done securely from anywhere in the world why can’t the simple process of voting be done online?
