September 6, 2023

[Updated with video] Yushae DeSilva-Andrade has made an impressive showing to capture a gold medal at the Fortaleza World Boccia Cup in Brazil.

The Bermudian athlete had advanced to the finals earlier today [Sept 6] after defeating Andreza De Oliveira, the current #1 ranked player in the world, in the semi-finals.

Her coach Troy Farnsworth said, “Yushae beat Satanan Phromsiri [world number 6] by 7-5 to win the Gold. Yushae got off to a fantastic start winning 4 points in the 1st end, immediately putting pressure on her opponent. Phromsiri then scored 2 to make the score 4-2 half way through the match. Yushae then took full advantage of some missed shots from her opponent and scored a further 3 points in the 3rd end to give her a 5 shot lead heading into final end. Phromsiri was only able to score 3 points in final end which wasn’t enough to stop Yushae winning the gold.

“This is the 1st gold medal Yushae has won at a major international event, and a fantastic achievement. She has won 2 silver medals this year and has worked incredibly hard to finally get the gold.

“After losing her first game of competition she fought back brilliantly and had to do it the hard way by beating the world number 1 which was an amazing achievement in itself. Her final competition of the year will be the Parapan Am Games in Chile in November.”
