Hawley Awarded Sixth Place in Vina Del Mar
Erica Hawley was awarded sixth place after four leading finishers were disqualified in the elite women’s race at the World Cup Triathlon Vina del Mar in Chile yesterday [November 12].
Katie Zaferes, of the United States, Tereza Zimovjanova, of the Czech Republic, Anna Godoy, of Spain, and Mathilde Guatier, of France, were all disqualified for not taking the correct course when they completed the first lap of the run.
Gwen Jorgensen, of the US, who had finished third, was eventually awarded the victory in place of compatriot Zaferes.
Hawley, who finished in 58min 38sec, wrote on Instagram: “Crossed the line in tenth, but four women in front of me were disqualified for not running the prescribed course, so my official result is sixth.
“Honestly, I wasn’t catching any of the ladies in front, so I feel mixed about placing sixth, especially when there’s so much on the line for everyone racing right now [in terms of qualification for the Olympic Games].”
Hawley, who came fourth at the recent Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, added: “On a personal level, I’m super happy with how I executed the race and the progress I’ve made.
“I’m feeling more confident in myself, and believe that I belong in the top ten of a World Cup, and it isn’t just a ‘fluke’.
“This year has been the most demanding yet most rewarding and exciting. Let me just say, boy-oh boy, am I ready for off-season.”
