Dale Butler, former teacher, principal and Government Minister, said he cannot wait to serve as chief judge at the Christmas Carol-Off at the LF Wade International Airport.
Hosted by Skyport, the event will be held on December 11, 13 and 14 from 9.30 am to 2 pm and feature 14 local schools showcasing their musical prowess.
The winning school will receive $5,000, the runners-up $2,500, while the People’s Choice Award winner, chosen by the public, will receive $1,200. The prizemoney will go towards the schools’ music programmes.
“As a former teacher and principal, I miss live school choir performances and Christmas plays,” Mr Butler told Bernews.
“There was a time when our TV stations recorded them. It’s good to see choirs performing at rest homes and in hotels. The competition should be celebrated.
“First, commendations to the principals and teachers who prepare the children. Second, commendations to the parents, and last but not least, commendations to the children who always seem to enjoy public performances. This is a great idea, and I look forward to being chief judge.”
More than 650 voices will participate in the competition from the following school choirs: Saltus Upper Primary Choir, Elliot Primary Bell Choir, Elliot Primary School, Gilbert Institute, Paget Primary Show Choir, Victor Scott Girls Choir, Harrington Sound Primary School Choir Club, Somersfield Steel Pan Orchestra, Whitney Institute Middle School Vocal Ensemble, Warwick Academy Primary Choir, Warwick Academy Secondary Choir, Francis Patton Secondary Choir, BHS Primary School Singers, Port Royal Primary School Choir, the Berkeley Institute Choir, Somerset Primary School Choir, MSA Middle School Choir, West Pembroke Primary School and the Bermuda Institute.
Unique local gifts, sweets and gourmet treats will be available for purchase, with the Whistling Frog Rum Bar and Grill offering seasonal specials and Somers Isle Mini Mart showcasing an array of Bermuda-inspired gift items from local producers.
Nikki Fagan, the Skyport head of brand development and marketing, said: “We’re thrilled to announce that Skyport will be celebrating the holidays in a big way here at LF Wade International Airport.
“We’ll host the Great Christmas Carol-Off, pitting schools from around the island in an exciting musical competition. We have choirs, ensembles, and even a steel pan orchestra.”
