Video: Nahki Wells Scores In Bristol City Victory
Bermuda’s Nahki Wells scored for Bristol City as they played to a 2 – 0 victory over Newport County.
The club’s match report said, “Bristol City earned their first win of pre-season, beating Newport County 2-0 at the Robins High Performance Centre.
“Nahki Wells gave City the lead in the 69th minute before Sinclair Armstrong doubled the Robins’ advantage moments before full-time.
“City’s dominant display held the visitors to few chances, which also earned them a first pre-season clean sheet.
“In classic pre-season style, the first half offered little in terms of finishing, with both teams unable to convert their opportunities.
“City’s first attempt at goal fell to Wells in the second minute, but his effort was well saved. Armstrong followed with two efforts but could only force a corner for his hard work, as City tried to force an opening.
“The visitors broke through in the ninth minute, but Stefan Bajic stormed off his line to deny Michael Spellman one-on-one.
“Taylor Gardner-Hickman’s free kick after 15 minutes found Rob Atkinson who had his towering header blocked off the line by the recovering Exiles defender.
“Ross McCrorie and Max Bird also tried their luck but neither effort tested Nick Townsend in the visiting goal.
“Near the 30-minute mark, Bird powered through midfield once again and slipped a pass to Armstrong who fired at Townsend. Mark Sykes then followed up, but his strike sailed wide and into the side netting.
“Moments later Armstrong had another attempt blocked from close range, after Wells’ cross picked him out at the front post, ultimately leaving the match goalless at the break.
“City started the second half brightly as Wells attempted a curled effort from the edge of the box but his strong effort failed to hit the target.
“McCrorie and Anis Mehmeti combined nicely down the right-hand side, but the former’s effort to finish off the move failed to test the keeper.
“Liam Manning then made his first substitution on the hour mark which saw Sykes make way for Raekwon Nelson.
“Gardner-Hickman nearly capitalised on a loose back pass by Newport County and looked set to give City the advantage, but his poked effort went narrowly wide.
“The opening goal came in the 69th minute after Bird’s splitting pass found Wells who fired low into the back of the net to give City the lead.
“Manning then made his second substitute in the 76th minute as Zack Asghar-Ali replaced Atkinson.
“The visitors came close to an equaliser on the break, but Luke Jephcott was unable to convert the visitors’ best chance of the game.
“It was Armstrong who doubled City’s advantage after a good change of pace, and neat cut-back from Nelson, found City’s newest signing at the front post.”
