Brownies Donate Groceries To Families
Brownies recently donated groceries to the Devonshire Council to be given to needy families in the Devonshire parish community.
A spokesperson said, “As part of their recently made Brownie Promise, which is recited by every Brownie entering the Girlguide Organization, the Amalgamated First Devonshire and First West Pembroke Brownies presented four shopping bags of groceries to the Chairperson of Devonshire Council to be given to families in need.
“Brownies vowed they would spread Good Cheer each and everyday and serve their community by lending a hand. The Girlguide Association which is now known as Girlguiding Bermuda is over 100 years old and is blessed to continue its program throughout Bermuda with caring hardworking leaders and eager, bubbly girls who range in age from 5 to 18. The support from parents is amazing.
“The First Devonshire West Pembroke Brownie pack has developed an intergenerational spirit throughout the years as they welcome grandparents, parents, relatives of brownies, members of the Church where they meet and school staff who create an atmosphere of trust, tolerance and goodwill and friendship, which strengthens the movement.
“One Brownie’s grandpa comes early every week and helps Brown Owl and Tawny Owl, school buddies , who have recently turned 70, by carrying bags, projects and suitcases of crafts down the steps of the first Baptist Church in Devonshire every Thursday. Other parents put up tables, pack away chairs after meetings, remove trash from the building and clean the bathroom in preparation for other groups using the church. They bring fruits for the leaders and take pictures to be shared on a group chat for the members of the Brownie family.
“The Brownies donated four hampers of food to the Devonshire Parish Council to be given to needy families in the Devonshire parish community.
“The First Devonshire, First West Pembroke Brownies have donated funds to the feeding program at First Baptist Church where they meet, as well as the Salvation Army, the Lions Club and other charities in Bermuda. They have created encouragement notes with drawings for the children in Florida and North Carolina who lost their homes during the recent hurricane.
“Over the years they carried out and received awards for cleaning beaches and streets of Devonshire during their meetings.
“They presented pouches of care to ladies and gents at The Salvation Army shelters and Women’s Resource Centre and created cookbooks which were sold to raise funds for patients in need at the Beresford Swan Dialysis unit at the hospital. They learned how to crochet and made 30 hats for preemies at the King Edward Memorial Hospital. They have learned about the importance of mangroves as feeding habitats for small fish and regularly protect the Bluehole Mangrove reserve by collecting litter with their peers and families.
“In October they collected over 1000 pieces of plastics found in seaweed on the beach at Bluehole Mangrove reserve. This started the study of Plastics in the Oceans and its impact on marine life. They are preparing for their first symposium on stewardship in the environment.
“These young ladies are learning early that change in their community starts with them. There are fifteen members who attend public and private schools in the Brownie Pack and they represent several countries. All respect each other, their cultures and religious beliefs.”
