Tennis: Bermuda Defeat Costa Rica In Opener
Bermuda’s Davis Cup tennis team secured a 2-1 victory over host nation Costa Rica in their Americas Group III opener at the Costa Rica Country Club.
Daniel Phillips earned Bermuda’s first point in singles, defeating Christian Felipe Winstead of Costa Rica 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. The match lasted nearly three hours, with Phillips overcoming a first-set tie-break loss.
Costa Rica evened the tie when Jesse Flores defeated Bermuda’s Trey Mallory 6-4, 7-6 in a two-hour singles match.
The decisive doubles saw Phillips and Mallory team up against Flores and Winstead. The Bermudian pair delivered a 6-2, 7-5 straight-sets victory, sealing the overall 2-1 upset win for Bermuda.
