Family Forum ‘Call To Action’ Discussion
Family Forum organizers said they “were heartened by the strong community turnout and engagement at its recent Call to Action panel discussion moderated by Calvin Burgess and aimed at addressing the troubling rise in gun violence on the island.”
A spokesperson said, “The public forum, held at the Whitney Institute Middle School on July 10th at 6pm, served as a powerful platform for open conversation, healing, and a renewed commitment to community action. Opening the event was Pamela Butterfield performing the song ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon allowing the audience to imagine a Bermuda without gun violence. Attendees left the event inspired and equipped with actionable steps, to take with them to their homes, schools, and neighborhoods.
Panelists
“Dorian Tucker. Fmr. Prison Officer and Motivational Speaker, emphasized the critical role of the home environment and family unit, issuing a heartfelt challenge to the men of Bermuda to lead by example.
“Dr. Ernest Peets, founder of MASC, affirmed the importance of men engaging in honest, vulnerable conversations as a path to healing. He highlighted how Adverse Childhood Experiences [ACE’s] often underlie the anti-social behaviors seen in both youth and adults.”
Anthony Bascome, Educational Therapist at Success Academy, urged attendees to actively listen to and truly see the island’s young people. “These are their most impressionable years,” Bascome stated. “As parents and adults, we must meet them where they are, build trust and guide them toward better choices. There are no bad children – only bad decisions.”
A spokesperson added, “A central message echoed throughout the discussion: when positive male role models and healthy home environments are absent, the “streets” step in to fill the void – often with devastating consequences. Without intervention, young people risk being swept into alternative lifestyles that may lead to incarceration or death.
“Kenlyn Smith, Vice Chairperson of Family Forum, noted the significance of the evening.”
“We were extremely pleased to see this conversation recognized for the national priority that it is,” she said. “Among the audience were the Hon. Michael Weeks, Minister of National Security and his wife; Opposition Member of Parliament, Mr. Robert King; social activist Glen Fubler; Gang Violence Reduction Team Leader Dr. Leroy Bean; and social commentators Dr. Lew Simmons and Rick Richardson – to name a few.
“We were especially moved by the courageous participation of mothers and fathers, directly affected by gun violence. Their stories brought a powerful and emotional depth to the discussion.”
A spokesperson added, “As a grassroots organization, Family Forum remains committed to offering a platform for dialogue, education and collective action. The group invites all members of the community to attend upcoming panel discussions to gain insight, tools and support, to help create real change.”
Dr Stephanie Guthman, psychologist and former Director of Specialized Training & Assessment at Family Centre, and co-author of Bermuda Adverse Childhood Experiences [ACEs] Study stated, “As a proud member and co-founder of Family Forum, I’m truly encouraged to see our members carrying forward the vision that Martha Dismont and I set out — to be a strong, united voice advocating for the wellbeing of our community.
“Since introducing ACEs [Adverse Childhood Experiences] to Bermuda, it has been inspiring to witness the island’s growing focus on addressing root causes and finding meaningful ways to heal and support those affected. This work is vital, and I’m proud that Family Forum continues to play a role in these efforts.”
Family Forum Chairperson, Thania Redman closed out the event challenging the attendees with, “It is up to all of us to be the change we want to see.” She added, “Whether at home, in school, or in the workplace – everyone has a role to play in healing our community.”
A spokesperson added, “To learn more about ACEs and know your number visit https://tfc.bm/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/BDA-ACEs-Take-Action-Handout.pdf Connect with us by email at familyforum.bda@gmail.com or follow us @familyforumbda.”

I am really sorry that I missed this forum! I will be sure to keep my eyes open for a follow-up opportunity.
The Family Forum is valuable, but so is adequate policing on a consistent basis.
