OBA’s Fahy Suggests Referendum On CARICOM
“We remain of the view that if the Government is so convinced this is what Bermudians want then they should stand on their convictions and bring the matter before the people by holding a referendum,” OBA MP Michael Fahy said in regards to the proposal that Bermuda become a full member of CARICOM.
Shadow Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy said, “The One Bermuda Alliance has been clear on CARICOM. We have called for a Green Paper, followed by a White Paper followed by a referendum. It is arguable that the Story of Us is not a Green Paper since it falls woefully short on fully exploring the pros and cons of full CARICOM membership.
“We fully accept the emotional and cultural ties that exist between many Bermudians and our Caribbean friends. There is no doubting that in any way. What is of prime importance however is that the Government lay out its case as to why associate membership is no longer appropriate for Bermuda and why full membership will benefit all Bermudians. So far that case has not been made out in the Story of Us.
“We remain of the view that if the Government is so convinced this is what Bermudians want then they should stand on their convictions and bring the matter before the people by holding a referendum. We have been saying this since November 2023. What is the Government afraid of?”

Burt is on par with Orange top(Trump), my way nothing else.
Not that bad but, yep you know the decision has been made already, when will humans realise , there is no such thing as democracy.
Logic, common sense and fairness says have a referendum. The PLP MO is my way or the highway. Logic, common sense, and fairnes are not part of their operating doctrne. We don’t care what you think. The pro Caricom campaign is nothing but a charade funded by the taxpayer when the money would be better spent on a host of local issues.
“the money would be better spent on a host of local issues”
Like paying down on our current ac count debt so that my grandchildren do not have to pay for decisions made before they were born?
And well spent on Education
Of course – put it to the vote, it is a fundamental issue and the people need to decide.
What are the PLP afraid of I wonder?
