Karate Team Claims Medals At Miami Open
The Bermuda youth national karate team returned from the Miami Open International Championships with medals and a third-place team trophy after competing at Florida Memorial University.
Bermuda’s athletes competed against competitors from across the Caribbean and North America in multiple divisions.
Team Bermuda also received the third-place team trophy after fielding one of the tournament’s largest international delegations.
The team opened the weekend by attending an international training seminar led by Olympic medallists Ariel Torres and Grace Lau.
Competition began on Saturday with Amarriah Vaughans, Talaya Sousa and Alessia Vianello competing in kata divisions.
In the Female 10/11 Intermediate Kata division, Zoe Talbot narrowly missed out after losing a split decision, while Dash Bailey competed in the 14/15 Advanced Kata division.
Davonte Smith Richardson won bronze in the 16/17 Male Kata division during his first international competition.
On Sunday, Talia Fox won silver in the Female 16+ Intermediate/Advanced Kobudo division, while Tony Cabral competed in the Male Advanced Kobudo division.
Chan Simons and Giovanni Vianello competed in the Male 10/11 Novice Kata division, with Simons also taking part in kumite competition.
Fox later finished fourth after competing in the 18-34 Advanced Female Kata division, having initially been entered in the 35-44 category.
Cabral added Bermuda’s second bronze medal with his performance in kata competition.
The Bermuda Karate Federation thanked the Department of Sport and Recreation for its support through the Sports Investment Programme.
Several members of the national team are also expected to compete at the Lepercq Memorial Traditional Karate Tournament at Whitney Institute on June 28.
