CedarBridge Esports Creates Career Paths
[Written by Anya Thompson]
At CedarBridge Academy, gaming students get to understand esports as a legitimate pathway into future careers in media, technology, and business, rather than casual entertainment.
Esports, or electronic sports, is an organized competitive video gaming in which teams or individuals who compete in structured tournaments, before live and online audiences. Esports has grown into a global industry involving professional players, coaches, commentators, content creators, and production teams, making it much more than gaming.
At CedarBridge Academy, the introduction to esports has broadened students’ understanding of what this viable industry offers.
S4 student Jacob Rande shared his thoughts on the course, explaining that it opened his eyes to a wide range of career opportunities.
“I like the fact that I learned about all the career options in esports such as shoutcasting, coaching, and content creation. It is beyond playing games, it’s so much more, teamwork, good communication skills, adaptability, problem-solving, and social skills are all part of it,” he stated.
Jacob added that success in team-based games requires focus, collaboration and a deep respect for differing opinions.
“To play at a professional or higher level, you have to develop the ability to work together as a team, because others may have different but valuable input. I would recommend Esports to other students because it is a fun course that improves each year.”
S2 student London Wheatley also highlighted the competitive nature of esports and its broader benefits. He said he enjoys the intense matches and that the experience sharpens critical thinking skills through real-time strategy.
London stressed that while students are engaged in gaming, they are also learning about multiple career pathways and developing valuable skills such as cooperation.
Esports teacher Mr. Wade Herman noted the growing enthusiasm among students and emerging talent within the classroom. After conducting a class poll, S3 student Day’un Smith was voted as having the most promising sportscasting voice, pointing toward a potential career in broadcasting and media production. Day’un welcomed the recognition and hopes to pursue opportunities in competitive prize pool events.
Mr. Herman emphasized that Esports exposes students to multiple career pathways, including shoutcasting, coaching, content creation, game design, IT support, marketing, and event production. The program distinguishes itself as a comprehensive training platform rather than simply a gaming activity.
At CedarBridge Academy, Esports is increasingly being viewed as a link between education and business, providing relevant skills and opportunities that align with the future digital economy. These opportunities have been strengthened through CedarBridge Academy’s partnership with Vault Academy, which has helped expand access to structured Esports education and career pathways.
“Our partnership with CedarBridge Academy has been one of the most rewarding relationships in Vault Academy’s history,” said Keith Oliver, Co-Founder & CEO of Vault Academy. “What began three years ago as a shared vision for expanding access to esports education has grown into a model for what school-community partnerships can achieve. This fall marks our third year together. Students are competing, developing technical skills, and seeing real pathways into the gaming and technology industries.”
Oliver shared that CedarBridge students are positioned at the forefront of the esports career ecosystem.
Looking ahead, Vault Academy plans to deepen the partnership by introducing FAA Drone Part 107 Certification and Game Design with Python courses, expanding the pipeline from gaming culture into aviation technology and software development.
Instructional Leader for Business & IT, Mr. Dean Foggo, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership and the opportunities it provides for students.
“We are excited about the opportunities available to our students through Vault Academy. These programs allow students to engage with emerging technologies as active participants, not just observers. The enthusiasm surrounding esports across our school reflects the impact of these experiences. This is what we mean when we say we ‘Cultivate Bermuda’s Achievers.’ The opportunities are right here at CedarBridge Academy, and I am proud to support our students and Mr. Herman in making them possible.”
As the program evolves, students are starting to realize what the industry professionals and the educators have long understood: esports is more than ‘just’ gaming; it’s a platform for skill development, career development and future opportunities.
